Although the work is usually associated with the Christmas season, it is a timeless piece that can be programmed at any time during the school year. The string parts mirror the voice parts, but are in the more comfortable key of G major, rather than the original B≤ major. String teachers may want to consult with their choral counterparts to determine if combining their groups might provide a unique experience for all of their students. All the string parts remain in first position. The work contains the less common alternating meters of ëand ò, and will provide students with insight into the unique rhythmic style of the Renaissance period. A piano part is included for rehearsal purposes.Performance suggestions: By listening to a recording of the original vocal performance and focusing on the lyrics, students will understand where to use a connected legato bowing style for running eighth-note passages and for the longer note durations, as expressed in the lyric “Ho-di-e, Ho-di-e” that alternates with a light detached style “No-e, No –e, No-e.” A most recent YouTube link is suggested here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2rAkZE5UU0.

Originally written for string quartet, this fantastic characteristic piece from Glazunov is a welcome addition to the string orchestra repertoire, as arranged by Deborah Baker Monday. Well-suited for the more advanced ensemble, it contains excellent musical opportunities and the chance to play the music of a prominent Russian composer. Deborah's setting stays very true to the original, but enhances it for use by the full ensemble. Alert your contest/festival music committee to this worthy new piece for high school string orchestras.Alexander Glazunov (1865–1936) lived during a very transitional period of Russian music history, active as a composer, conductor, and teacher. He was a part of the Romantic school of Russian music following in the tradition of Tchaikovsky, like his fellow composers Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov.During his years at the conservatory he instructed many students who chose to pursue the modern trends set forth by Debussy. Stravinsky, Shostakovich, and even Prokofiev took instruction from Glazunov. Although they considered him old-fashioned, he was remembered as a stabilizing influence during transitional times.Glazunov’s music stayed within the category of Russian Romanticsm: nationalistic with classical formality. His list of works includes numerous symphonies, concertos, piano and vocal works, and chamber works including seven string quartets.Op. 15 was first given the title “Suite” (a collection of dances), and after a friend’s recommendation he changed the name to “Novelettes”. The five movements are of contrasting style, but beautifully reminiscent of their particular themes:I. Alla SpagnuolaII. OrientaleIII. Interludium in modo anticoIV. ValseV. All’ UnghereseThis movement is very well adaptable for string orchestra. The original string quartet moodis light, using harmonics and pizzicato, but there are forceful sections which allow for strong sectional playing (especially with the cello and bass orchestral sound). There is very much interesting melodic material offered for all instruments which lends itself to a fantastic string orchestra arrangement. Conductors will find material in all sections which provide greatopportunities for rehearsal. The form is a large ABA with a D.C. al fine, but the sections are not square by any means. There is lots of energy and momentum in the material of both sections, as well as a modalcharacter which gives the music an exotic sound. Bowing patterns abound in all sections formore great teaching opportunities.

Inspired by the mascot of Falls Church High School in Virginia, this piece depicts the fierceness and speed of the jaguar. The exciting motif in the key of A minor follows the jaguar deep into the Mayan jungles, with mystical hints of the deity it was once believed to be. In ancient Mayan ruins, carvings of the jaguar are still visible today. They tell a story of the powerful cat whose eyes reflected in the night, leading the Maya people to call it the god of terrestrial fire. The music follows the jaguar on a hunt with driving rhythms in the cellos and basses, a brief violin solo, and an energetic melody that runs and leaps like the mighty jaguar, fearless and proud.

A lively and exhilarating new piece for beginning string groups, Effervescence lives up to its title but is so much more. It also contains lush harmonies, sweeping melodic gestures reminiscent of the America school of composers like Copland. It is a sophisticated musical presentation, but with limited technical demands, making it easy for young students, but very musically satisfying.Effervescence is commonly known as the act of a gas escaping a liquid and the “fizzing” result that occurs. A secondary definition, however, is a show of liveliness or exhilaration. It is this secondary definition that is the inspiration for this piece. The piece begins with a broad, sweeping introduction followed by a statement of the main theme in the first Violins at m. 11. The second Violins perform the melody at m. 19, while the first Violins perform a countermelody which morphs into the main idea of the B-section that follows at m. 27. The Celli and Bass restate the main theme at m. 35, while the upper strings provide a sweeping harmony with a somewhat “Americana” feel. After a restatement of the B-section at m. 43, a subdued section with new material occurs at m. 51. This pushes into a final restatement of the main theme at m. 59 and leads to a vibrant conclusion, followed by a pianissimo afterthought.
