Arnold Schoenberg's Six Little Pieces, Opus 19, originally for Piano, were published in 1913 at a time when the composer was reacting to his feelings of the excesses of the Romantic Period. They were composed concurrently with his gigantic work Gurre-Lieder. The first five pieces were written in one day and the last one shortly after the death of Gustav Mahler as a rumored tombeau or memorial. Mr. Sauer has deftly arranged these six short pieces of around 5 minutes in length for advanced performers.

This volume brings together Schönberg's complete works for piano solo, and thereby presents a wide span from the free atonal pieces of op. 11 to the aphoristic op. 19, the fascinating tone-row experiments of op. 23 to the dodecaphonically conceived works op. 25, 33a and 33b. Additionally, in the appendix, three pieces from 1894 by the twenty-year-old composer provide an astonishing insight into the late-romantic roots of the modern Schönberg. His compositional development can be easily traced in this edition, which incorporates all kinds of milestones of classical modernism alongside thrilling, trailblazing music. Anyone wanting to engage with Schönberg's piano works should not miss this compendium!

The piano works by the Swiss composer Erich Schmid (1907-2000), written between 1926 and 1943, are close to the Viennese School of Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern, but bring their own special colour to this spectrum. Even where they are twelve-tonal, Schmid's piano pieces do not exhaust themselves in strict constructivism, but often have a playful, motoric side. With their manageable rangeand complexity, they provide a comparatively easy access to a style that was formative in the first half of the 20th century. Splitter (Volume 2), a collection of folk song arrangements and character pieces in a freely tonal style, is particularly easy to play. Schmid's first collection Kleine Musik (Volume 1) can also be mastered by amateurs.

As part of the Hannenheim Edition, pianist Moritz Ernst, following his CD recording on the eda records label (EDA 38), presents thisanthology of all known piano sonatas by Arnold Schoenberg's master-class pupil. Coming from different creative phases, they show thewhole variety of Hannenheim's original, often experimental style. The intellectually sound structure of his music is contrasted witha sombre, unsteadily fluctuating level of expression. The pianistic interpretation of the pieces, which are preferably in two movements, sometimes demands fine dynamic nuances, sometimes a great breath for exuberant counterpoint.
