Personnage à la personnalité très affirmée et extravagant individualiste, Satie se distança sciemment des traditions musicales romantiques héritées du XIXe siècle. Ses trois miniatures pour le piano intitulées «Gymnopédies» sont les premiers témoignages de son idée de «nouvelle simplicité»: des rythmes répétés obsédants imitant des danses cultuelles antiques produisent un charme méditatif tout à fait particulier. Un des principes de Satie consistant à aligner des blocs constitutifs, plutôt que de les soumettre à un développement bien précis, ouvrira de larges perspectives à plusieurs courants musicaux du XXe siècle. A leur simplicité enfantine?Quoiqu’il en soit, ce sont trois valses lentes, de même facture, dans lesquelles un thème, à la main droite, se déploie sur un accompagnement obstiné, basse sur le premier temps, accord sur le deuxième.Les nuances, allant de pp à p (hormis quelques passages f ), les indications de tempo (lent et douloureux, lent et triste, lent et grave), les septièmes non résolues de l’harmonie, tout contribue au caractère mélancolique qui se dégage de ces trois pièces.

This new, completely revised edition of the Trois Gymnopédie is based on Robert Orledge's critical edition of Satie's works for piano (in 3 volumes; catalogue numbers: SLB 5960 - SLB 5961 - SLB 5962). Orledge's work has returned to Satie’s manuscripts and first editions to give pianists completely accurate and reliable texts to play from.
