Il choisit de dédier ses «Avant-dernières pensées» à trois de ses illustres contemporains: son ami Claude Debussy (n° 1, «Idylle»), Paul Dukas, dont il admirait la musique (n° 2, «Aubade»), et Albert Roussel, son ancien professeur de contrepoint à la Schola Cantorum (n° 3, «Méditation»).
