Commissioned by the Orchestre de Paris, and first performed by them in 1999 with soloist Anssi Karttunen, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. The work is cast in a 25-minute span punctuated by an improvised cadenza. Performers not wishing to improvise may substitute Boria from Lindbergs solo cello suite Partia, which is included in the publication. Diapason commented, The writing is homogeneous, virtuosic, energetic, with the cello up near the bridge almost without interruption in a highly taut style which travels at a quickstep through all the possibilities of the instrument. Those possibilities include scordatura (for both soloist and orchestral cellos) and the so-called 'seagull' glissando.

Composer's Note YTA is Swedish for 'surface'; my series of three YTA's - YTA 1 (alto flute), YTA 2 (Piano), YTA 3 (Cello)- were written with particular performers/friends in mind, and in each piece I have tried to capture and explore aspects of their virtuosity and that of their instrument. Being a Finn, 'surfaces' are often snowy and icy, and the music reflects a sparkling, crystalline and sometimes blinding quality, just as a vibrating, shimmering surface reflects a shing light. Although the surface of the music is extremely busy and dispenses with traditional medlody altogether, the formal process is considerably slower and partly hidden behind the frenetic stream and gleam of fast gestures. Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Nachtlieder (Night Songs) is Salonen's early work dating from 1978. It is in fact a sort of descendant of Alban Berg's Vier Stucke fur Klarinette und Klavier op. 5 (1913). Like Berg, Salonen has condensed his Expressionist night songs into concise, miniature-like proportions. The four-movement work is dominated by a meditative mood and the expressive melodies of the clarinet. This arrangement for ensemble by prof. Gregory Barrett is scored for flute, tenor saxophone, percussion, violin, viola, violoncello, double bass and the solo clarinet.
