Zoltán Kocsis (1952 - 2016) was not just a phenomenal pianist. He was also regarded as a musical 'polymath' whose genius embraced the activities of a composer, conductor, editor, instrumentalist, and arranger. In the last capacity, he added some 150 works to symphonic, chamber, song and piano repertoire. He gladly adapted music of the turn of the 20th century, as appears from his transcriptions of Richard Strauss, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Enescu, and above all, Debussy. (Many of these are distributed by Editio Musica Budapest.) 'In Debussy's case, (...) I was always interested in works that offered possibilities beyond the bounds of the piano, possibilities for orchestration.Just as with Liszt it was often possible to see that certain of his works had been written for piano for publication purposes, so with Debussy it is clear that mainly his song accompaniments exceeded the bounds of possibility for the piano,' Kocsis stated in one interview. Perhaps that recognition also encouraged him to arrange the popular piano work Valse romantique (1890) for clarinet and piano. The arrangement superbly pinpoints the sensitive, almost ingratiating tunefulness of the Waltz, adding a piece that sounds great and is rewarding to perform to the clarinet repertoire.

In his youth, when still searching for his own personal style, Debussy composed a series of short, stand-alone piano pieces. He took traditional genres such as the ballade, mazurka, nocturne and waltz, but in general used each of them just once, as if trying them out. One such was the “Valse romantique”, published by Choudens of Paris in 1891 and thus written at the same time as his famous piano works “Two Arabesques” and the “Suite bergamasque”. This charming waltz is of moderate difficulty and thus ideal either as a pedagogical piece or for concert performance. Our collected volume “Debussy: Piano Pieces” (HN 404) offers numerous other short piano pieces of modest difficulty for those who find that this practical, stand-alone edition awakens in them a desire for more.

Claude Debussy (1862-1918) composed Valse Romantique (F minor; CD 79/L.71) in 1890 for solo piano, during a period when he was short piano works in traditional genres, seeking his own style. Unlike the impressionism for which he later became known, this waltz is written in a late romantic style. Not particularly difficult, it is ideal for teaching or for a recital. This transcription for violin or flute and piano was created in 1924 by Alexandre Roelens. Reprint edition.

This facsimile of an original by Isidore Bertheaume is part of our French classical music collection. Edition : Paris, l'Auteur, 1787. The orchestra is modest in size: strings, 2 oboes, 2 horns. The solo parts may be played by the orchestra,s section leaders. The second symphonie concertante adds to the two solo violins either a solo viola or solo horn. For this project, which led to a concert performance at th Abbaye aux Dames, a full score was prepared and has been added to the facsimile.
