One of my greatest pleasures in writing a concerto is exploring the new world that opens for me each time I enter the sometimes alien, but always fascinating, world of a solo instrument or instruments. For me, the challenge is to discover the deepest nature of the solo instrument (its karma, if you will) and to allow that essential character to guide the shape and form of the work and the nature of the interaction between soloists and orchestra. In recent years, many of us have become more aware of the musical world outside the Western tradition of musics that follow different procedures and spring from other aesthetics. And contemporary percussionists have opened many of these worlds to us, as they have ventured around the globe, participating in Brazilian Samba schools, studying Gamelan and African drumming with local experts, collecting instruments from Asia and Africa and South America and the South Pacific, widening our horizons in the process. I will never forget our first meeting in Toronto when Nexus invited me into their world of hundreds of exciting percussion instruments. The vast array of instruments in the collection of the Nexus ensemble is truly global in scope as well as offering a thrilling sound-universe. I was inspired by the incredible range of sound and moved by the fact that so many of these instruments were musical reflections of a spiritual dimension. After long consideration, I decided that it would not only be impossible, but even undesirable for this Western-tradition-steeped composer to attempt to use these instruments in a culturally authentic way. My goal was an existential kind of authenticity: searching instead for universal ideas that would be true to both myself and the performers while acknowledging the traditional uses of the instruments. Since many percussion instruments are associated with various kinds of ritual, I decided that I would allow that concept to shape my piece. Rituals is in four movements, each issuing from a ritual associated with percussion, but with the orchestral interaction providing an essential element in the musical form. I. Invocation alludes to the traditions of invoking the spirit of the instruments, or the gods, or the ancestors before performing. II. Ambulation moves from a processional, through march and dance to fantasy based on all three. III. Remembrances alludes to traditions of memorializing. IV. Contests progresses from friendly competition games, contests to a suggestion of a battle of big band drummers, to warlike exchanges. In the 2nd and 4th movements, another percussion tradition, improvisation, is employed. Written into these movements are a number of seeds for improvisation. Indications in the score call for the soloists to improvise in three different ways, marked A for percussion alone; marked B for percussion with and in response to the orchestra; and C where the percussionists are free to add and embellish the written parts. These improvisations should grow out of and embellish previous motives and gestures in the movement.

These chamber compositions of Anthony Iannaccone (born 1943) are refined, musicianly, and intellectually honest. Rituals, for violin and piano, is an extended composition skillfully fashioned and adroit in its adaptation of characteristic 'gestures' of the virtuoso recital piece. In Iannaccone's hands these 'gestures' are transmuted into something personal, while retaining, for the listeners' sake, the general shape of familiar territory. The blend of old and new, alternating between broadly lyrical and dramatic, adds up to a satisfying musical experience. --From the American Record Guide.

Two attractive and infectious melodies flow out of its rhythmically charged accompaniment, including a buoyant second theme first stated by the bassoon. For all its minimalist trappings and accompaniment, the work contained expressive color and deftly used dynamics, all within a comprehensible structure that approximated sonata form. --Pittsburgh Post-Gazette [Rhythms and Rituals] has [Galbraith's] characteristic clarity, precision, proportion and charm. --Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

This edition offers exciting arrangements that have never before appeared in print, written in an authentic idiom for three-part women's or girls' choir with piano accompaniment. The spirituals can also be performed without piano, with the lead melody always in the upper voice. All the arrangements can be combined with the already published edition “64 Spirituals a cappella” (BA 7574) which is for SATB. To give you an example: a children's choir working with our new edition can appear with a mixed chorus that has already mastered the SATB settings. In addition twelve of the arrangements can be enhanced by instrumental accompaniments. These are to be found in the “Spirituals” edition (BA 6699) of our “ComboCom” series which offers flexible instrumental settings. The authorGraham Buckland is the music director of Regensburg University, Germany. Before then he held various leading positions at theatres and colleges in Germany and the Czech Republic. He has founded and headed a number of ensembles, demonstrating a very broad musical range that also finds expression in his compositions and publications for chorus, piano, and orchestra.

The choral collection Hallelujah. Gospels and Spirituals transports us into the fascinating world of African American folk songs. 30 gospels and spirituals have been arranged for mixed choir, unaccompanied or with piano. The choral parts sometimes divide, and occasionally solo parts (or even a small choral group) are required. The arrangements with their catchy rhythms, groove, their blue notes and other elements from Jazz and Blues and the principles of call-and-response will move performers and audiences in equal measure. As well as American classics (e.g. Amazing grace, Go down Moses, Kumbaya, Deep river, Down by the riverside, Good News, O when the saints, Nobody knows, Joshua fit the battle of Jericho), the collection also contains some discoveries from the beginnings of the genre. Just under half the arrangements were specially commissioned for the collection. Young composers from the USA (such as Courtney Carey, Marques Garrett) and arrangers from Canada, Denmark, and Germany (including Mark Sirett, John Hoybye, Thomas Gabriel, Carsten Gerlitz, Gunther Martin Gottsche, and Hans Ludemann) have contributed to this stylistically extremely varied choral collection. The medium difficulty level will enable many choirs to get to grips with the gospel style, something which perhaps few of them are very familiar with. Tips from the editors on performance, and a CD recording with a selection of the arrangements will help with learning the pieces. With their deep and emotional symbolism of captivity and repression on the one hand and redemption and freedom on the other hand, these Gospel settings are well-suited for many uses in concerts and church services. arrangements of around 30 spirituals and gospels for four-part mixed choir a cappella or with keyboard accompaniment medium difficulty level a good introduction for choirs with little previous experience of this repertoire includes popular classics such as Amazing grace, Deep river, Go down Moses, Good News, Nobody knows, Joshua fit the battle of Jericho wide variety of styles with many new arrangements conductor's score with CD Introductory price: 29.90 Euro, from 01.12.2019: 34.90 Euro.
