Resignation was composed in memory of one of Ed Kiefer's best friends. Evoking the struggle of coming to grips with the loss of a dear friend, the piece is based on the hymn, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need. It is dramatic, heartfelt, and overwhelmingly beautiful. Neither could I write a piece that could come close to reflecting his kind spirit, wit, personality or talent. In fact, it was almost impossible for me to write anything at all. My own grief and the stages of my grief kept getting in the way. I ended up with a setting of the hymn-tune, Resignation. Resigned. To the fact that he is no longer with us. I know he is in a better place, but we are not. We miss him very much. And so, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need seems to speak to those of us he left behind. I apologize if this piece does not reflect your special feelings for him or help you celebrate his moving on. Unfortunately, I could only put down what I have come to accept and hope in some way it may speak to any of you that knew him or to others of you who have also lost a close friend. My Shepherd Will Supply My Need. That is my hope and my hope for you.Although technically very easy, this composition requires a maturity of musicianship to be performed properly. The Bb contrabass clarinet part is integral to the composition, but there are cues in the tuba part if you need them. Make sure you bring horns to the fore at m. 53 and the low brass at m. 59 so the melody can be heard without effort. Exaggerate dynamics to bring more emotion to the piece. Be careful not to diminuendo too soon near the end or it will be difficult to diminish even further at the very end, where the lone clarinetist holds over a couple of measures, fading into nothing. I hope your students will enjoy this piece and take from it a greater appreciation for the way making music can express feelings.

We urge you to look at this important new composition by James Curnow. This symphonic variant style treatment of themes based on the shape-note tune Resignation is a magnificent compositional exploration. Once your group has achieved the ability to perform at this level of difficulty, they deserve to play music with the challenge and masterful quality that Inventions from the Sacred Harp presents. Even a brief analysis of the score reveals composition and development techniques that are reserved for pieces on an impressive scale. A more thorough analysis lets you appreciate the complexity of the compositional processes found in the very fabric of this major work. The historical significance of The Sacred Harp provides the opportunity for some cross-curricular work as well. My second String Quartet was written twenty years after the first, Opus 4 from 1978. The First Quartet is an obsessively contrapuntal work in one movement, which was no doubt influenced by my studies with David Diamond. I had always intended to return to the medium once I left the astringency of my earlier style, but it was only when the National Federation of Music Clubs commissioned a major chamber work, with unspecified instrumentation, to celebrate their 100th Anniversary that I was enabled to do so. The Second Quartet is in four movements: Moderato, Allegro isterico, an Andante theme with 11 variations, and the closing Allegro, which then returns to the tempo of the first movement. An audience member at the premiere told me that she heard echoes of recent tragic events such as the Oklahoma bombing in this work. While I had no such programmatic intent while writing the quartet, it was not an entirely incorrect assessment of the work's intended emotional impact. The quartet is pervaded by a sense of seriousness, even mournfulness. The second movement's scherzo is an aggressively animated piece of musical machinery. The third movement's Variations unfold into a greater variety of moods than the others - but the moments of lyricism are countered by aggressive or ironic outbursts. The final movement's attempt at triumph quickly subsides into a return of the first movement, before being transformed onto a sense of resignation and acceptance as the chromaticism of the opening theme is transformed into a pure and diatonic C-Major. The work received its world premiere by the Shanghai Quartet at the 100th Anniversary Congress of the National Federation of Music Clubs at the Congress Hotel in Chicago on August 19th 1998.My second String Quartet was written twenty years after the first, Opus 4 from 1978. The catalogues list under the title 'Resignazione' a short work for organ consisting merely of 29 bars. The investigation of sources carried out by the editors in connection with the New Complete Edition of Liszt's Works revealed that this is, in fact a work for piano the final version of which was worked out later. Liszt never published this manuscript and this late masterpiece has remained unknown for scholars as well. The present edition publishes the work for the first time. The publication includes the first version of the work too.

Bring the Passion Story and its impact to life through moving music and Pamela Stewart’s compelling narrative: from the euphoria surrounding Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem to the desolation of the lonely Garden as He fully embraced God’s plan and ensuing death; from the genuine love conveyed to His faithful followers in the Upper Room to the loneliness experienced in His final hours as those same followers rejected and abandoned Him; from the anger that filled the hearts of those who now called for His crucifixion to the tender resignation of a Roman soldier that this indeed was the Son of God; from utter despair as He died on a cross to triumphant joy as Christ’s followers began to realize that His prophetic words had become reality. All of this and so much more happened within a single week! Combining the compositional talents of Lloyd Larson, Faye López, R. Kevin Boesiger, Larry Shackley, Molly Ijames, Mark Hayes, and Pepper Choplin, this inspiring cantata provides an unforgettable worship experience. It can be used in segments for use throughout Lent or Holy Week or performed in its entirety. With options for choir and piano alone or the addition of either a live orchestra or the accompaniment tracks (available separately), Hallelujah! What a Savior! is a powerful resource for choirs large or small.

The “small suite in the old style” was created in September 1992. It is not an outward stylization of early music, but rather an attempt to adopt a kind of Baroque-style thinking. But since we are 200 years older, our thinking is more reflective. That is, our C major sounds sadder today, more nostalgic, our 6/8 Presto more desperate than then, and we do not have the courage to finish the work tonally. Something is not working, although the sounds are always the same. And the quote from Bach's “Chromatic Fantasy” looks like a gem; Nevertheless, can not we already hear something about our resignation in this famous motif? That is, we remember today Bach's prophecies, we make, so to speak, a double time travel ... –Vassily Lobanov.

Farewell MusicWith the Ernste Gesaenge (Serious Songs) for baritone and string orchestra Hanns Eisler created at the end of his life a key work whose complex message becomes more than clear from the music settings of texts by five different poets, together with the Holderlin motto articulated in the prologue. It reflects - between resignation and hope - the difficult current state of societal development. At the same time, not least by harking back to earlier works, it is a kind of quintessence of his composing. The piano arrangement of the subtle orchestral accompaniment is intended not only as a study aid for singers, but also as a work for public performance.

Zitat: Moro lasso, al mio duolo (Ich sterbe, matt, an meiner Qual) (6. Buch) 3. Zitat: Gia piansi nel dolore; o dolorosa Sorte (Schon weinte ich in Schmerzen, oh schmerzliches Geschick) (6. Buch) 4. Zitat: Ahi gia mi discolero (Ach schon entfarbte ich mich) (Wehe, der Tod kommt) (4. Buch) 5. Davon will meine Musik etwas aussagen. (Jurg Baur)CD:Sinfonieorchester des Westdeutschen Rundfunks, cond. Although specifically describing the uncertainty of approaching night and an evening prayer, Hymn at Twilight is actually about the human emotions of doubt, insecurity, hope and resolve. This solemn piece opens quietly and introduces a recurring four-note rising figure. Optimism, anxiety and resignation alternate, with the flute taking centre stage. Brass and woodwind take up the chorale. The piece ends in a mood of sanguine optimism.

In Letter from Home, Philip Sparke has aimed aim to capture the emotions that can be experienced when away from home; a letter or phone call can bring both happy and sad emotions and music is perhaps unique in being able to express these subtle and paradoxical feelings. The calm opening leads to a reflective melody on clarinets and saxophones; but it is not long before the peaceful mood turns to turmoil, which eventually brings feelings of resignation in a calm chorale with a more positive mood.
