Personent Hodie is a medieval Christmas carol from the larger work Piae Cantiones—a published collection of songs intended for cathedral schools in 16th century Finland. The original tune uses modality and plainchant to evoke the mysterious character of Christmastide. This rhythmic setting of Personent Hodie expresses the tune in compound meter, resulting in a joyful energy. The optional hand drum and finger cymbals complement the melody with an exciting, dance-like pulse.“Ideo, gloria in excelsis Deo!”Therefore, glory be in the highest to God!Ideas for study and reflection: How might word stress be used to enhance overall musicality? What syllables should be stressed vs. unstressed? What dynamic markings are indicted in the score, and where do they occur? Listen to a recording of the original “Personent Hodie” written in 4/4 time. How are the two settings different? .

The celebration of Christmas gives each of us a yearly opportunity to relive and reflect on that first Christmas-the birth of our Savior and the promise of a new beginning as Christians. Through narration and song, this cantata contemplates the challenge to Mary (and us) to trust God and deepen our faith; to overcome our fears and rejoice in the birth of Jesus Christ as the shepherds did; and to offer gifts and to worship as did the Magi. While weaving familiar carols seemlessly into the fabric of the music, John Purifoy has provided his trademark original, tuneful approach to produce a Christmas service that leads us through the compelling Christmas story, celebrating a new birth and a new beginning for us all. Performance Time: approximately 35 minutes.

The composer writes: ??I was delighted to be asked by Daniel Hyde and King's College, Cambridge to write this year's commission for the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. I have chosen to set a familiar text and tune - Angelus ad Virginem - and for it to serve as a tribute to the late great Simon Preston CBE (chorister and later organ scholar at King's). The text suggests something descriptive and exuberant, and this arrangement makes use of the original 13th century carol throughout. A colorful organ part is designed to propel the music forward, sometimes twisting and distorting the melody in unexpected ways, hopefully reflecting something of Simon's wit, vitality and stylish energy.? - Matthew Martin.
