Of the 4 surviving settings of the Te Deum by Charpentier, the present one composed in the 'joyeux et tres guerrier' key of D major, is undoubtedly his most famous work, thanks to television producers who chose its opening prelude to be the Eurovision signature tune in the early 1950s. Although Charpentier's Parisian career is quite well documented, little is known about the genesis and first performance of the Te Deum but it has been suggested that it may have been performed during the celebrations of the military victory of Steinkerque (3 August 1692). It is likely, however, that it was commissioned by the Jesuits of the church of Saint-Louis (today, Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis) for whom Charpentier had been working as maitre de musique since 1687.

Who does not know the famous Te Deum Prelude by Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1634-1704)? This French composer studied both painting and composition in Italy. Returning to France, he took up the post of music master to the dauphin. He collaborated with Molière, working for the Théatre Francais until 1685. He then returned to court and was music director to the Princesse de Guise, composition teacher to the Duke d’Orleans and wrote music for the dauphin’s chapel. His Te Deum, of which the Prelude has become well known (particularly in Europe, where it is used as the Eurovision signature tune) is one of many pieces he wrote for important state and religious occasions.

Zijn Te Deum Prelude is heel bekend geworden als Eurovisie-herkenningsmelodie.Dit arrangement is geschikt voor kleine bezettingen, grotere bezettingen kunnen (met veel effect) hout- en koperblazers contrasterend inzetten.

Marc-Antoine Charpentier zählt zu den herausragendsten französischen Komponisten seiner Zeit. Sein Te Deum ist eines von vielen Stücken, die er für wichtige staatliche und religiöse Anlässe schrieb. Die Prelude aus Te Deum ist heute weithin als die Eurovisionsmelodie bekannt. Philip Sparkes Bearbeitung eignet sich auch für kleinere Besetzungen, größere Besetzungen können - sehr wirkungsvoll - kontrastiv Holz- und Blechbläser einsetzen. Biografisch ist das Agnus Dei eine Art kleines Requiem fur seinen kurz zuvor verstorbenen Vater. Das liturgische Agnus Dei rahmt den deutschen Text Eh das Madchen entschlief ... der bei Auffuhrungen in anderen Landern durch eine Ubersetzung ersetzt werden soll.

Der SWR-Redakteur Hans-Peter Jahn schreibt dazu im Programmheft: Die fur Smolka typischen minimalistischen Taktzellen schaffen eine archaische Sinnlichkeit. Eine einfache und zugleich streng gebaute Vokalmusik mit Tiefenwirkung.
