The Oxford Book of Christmas Music for Organ, Bk 2. The second Oxford Book of Christmas Organ Music comprises a diverse collection of seasonal organ music, covering the Church's year from Advent to Epiphany. Par NOURSE NANCY. The four preludes included in this collection are each based upon a tune associated with a particular time of the church calendar. The Lenten prelude, Meditation upon 'Forty Days and Forty Nights', likewise employs a theme with interpolations approach. The hymn tune, Heinlein, is most closely associated with the English text, 'Forty days and forty nights, Thou wast fasting in the wild'. However in the midst of this piece occur short musical representations of the three temptations. In the case of the Variations on an Old French Carol, its association is with both Easter in its text of 'Love is Come Again' and in its Christmas text of 'Noel Nouvelet' (or as sung in English, 'Sing We Now of Christmas'). The advent prelude, Meditation upon a Sarum Plainsong, uses the 7th century plainsong chant Conditor Alme Siderum as its basis, with frequent trope-like interpolations occurring between the phrases. Even more simply conceived, the rendering of the Victorian Christmas hymn, Once in Royal David's City. Written by Marcel Tournier, Féerie – Prelude Et Dance is a piece for Harp dedicated to Alphonse Hasselmans and to be played on the Pedal Harps. This piece would fit the skills and abilities of advanced Harp players and the technical difficulties encountered are numerous: hand-crossings, numerous arpeggios, natural harmonies, many accidental alterations as well as some pedal changes. Marcel Tournier (1879-1951) was a French harpist and teacher. He studied with Alphonse Hasselmans at the Paris Conservatoire and composed numerous pieces for Solo Harp: ' Russian Lullabies', 'Six Christmas', 'Four Preludes' and 'Three images, suite 1, Op. 29' among many others.

Five Hymn Tune Preludes (Op. 44) was composed in 1959. It is a collection of short works for solo Organ based on five of the most popular Anglican Hymn Tunes: Old Hundredth - Dundee - Darwall's 148th - Down Ampney - Veni Creator Spiritus. Each Prelude would be suitable for performance before or after a church service or the entire set could be used as a recital item. John Gardner (1917-2011) was a British composer and pedagogue. Best known for his setting of the Christmas Carol Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day he wrote a total of nearly 250 published works. He was Professor of Harmony and Composition at the Royal Academyof Music for over three decades and also taught at Morley College and St Paul’s Girls’ School.
