Pop Romance for Flute

Son of a military bandleader Xavier Leroux (1863-1919) was a French composer who studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Jules Massenet and Théodore Dubois. Although primarily known for his Operas Leroux's Deux Romances for Flute and Piano remain prominent in the instrument's repertoire. Dedicated to Philippe Gaubert the first Romance is composed in A minor. Characteristics are typical of the French romantic era such as semiquaver flourishes use of the sultry lower register of the Flute variations in articulation much use of performance directions and chromaticisms among otheraspects. For all aspiring advanced flautists Leroux's Deux Romances make for a sublime addition to the repertoire.

Romance for flute and piano is based on an original vocal work of the same title by the composer. This version was created for and dedicated to the world-reknown flutist Rita D'Arcangelo. If in his concertos for solo instrument and orchestra Saint-Saëns freed himself from the Viennese classical model (reconfiguring it with originality but in the light certainly of the formal experimentations of Schumann and of Biedermeier virtuosity) in the Romance opus 37 and other works of similar form (opus 27 36 and 48) he adopted the Romantic ternary Liedform (A–B–A) – in particular that of Schumann’s Stücke and Mendelssohn’s Lieder ohne Worte – and transcended the idiomaticity of the respective solo instruments nowinterchangeable ad libitum (Flute or Violin in the case of opus 37) thereby making the pieces more widely usable and emphasizing their cantabile quality.
