from the Opera The Night before Christmas-Nikolaï Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) composa son opéra La Nuit de Noël dans les années 1894-95. Cette oeuvre fut créée le 10 décembre 1895 à Saint-Pétersbourg. Signé par Rimski-Korsakov lui-même le livret s?inspire d?une histoire de Nikolaï Gogol qui quelques années plus tôt avait servi de matériel thématique à un opéra de Piotr Ilitch Tchaïkovski. The Night before Christmas (La Nuit de Noël) raconte l?histoire de Vakula le forgeron d?un petit village d?Ukraine. Il est follement amoureux d?Oxana qui demande en témoignage de son amour un cadeau de Noël très inhabituel : les splendides pantoufles de l?impératrice. Parfaitement conscient que dans descirconstances ordinaires il n?arriverait jamais à réaliser le souhait d?Oxana Vakula fait appel aux puissances surnaturelles qui se manifestant sous la forme du diable lui proposent un stratagème pour l?aider. Le diable porte alors Vakula sur son dos jusqu?à Saint-Pétersbourg où lors d?une réception somptueuse à la cour Vakula trouve l?occasion de présenter sa requête à l?impératrice. Celle-ci fini par y consentir et lui donne ses pantoufles. Il retourne donc à son village. Mais son absence avait fait croire qu?il était mort et Oxana était accablée de chagrin car elle avait pris conscience de l?amour véritable qu?elle portait au forgeron. Finalement tous les malentendus sont dissipés et tous les obstacles sont surmontés : Oxana reçoit son cadeau extravagant les amants sont réunis et les cloches appellent les villageois à la messe de minuit. La Polonaise est jouée au 3e acte de l?opéra à l?entrée de l?impératrice dont l?arrivée est anticipée dans le Prélude par des motifs de fanfare. La musique dépeint clairement l?ambiance de fête et le cadre merveilleux de la cour impériale de Saint-Pétersbourg que Rimski-Korsakov évoque dans son opéra. Cette oeuvre peut être interprétée en dehors du temps de l?Avent et de Noël notamment en ouverture de tout concert festif.
