All of the Polonaises included in this volume were written during Chopin's childhood and youthful years, through to the earliest of the Polonaises prepared personally for printing by the composer (op. 22 and 26). This strict division into two groups has no correlation with other Chopin categories: Mazurkas or Waltzes not published by Chopin came into being during his entire period of creative activity at the same time as those he made for publication. Both groups of Polonaises complement each other in a particular way, together giving an understandable cross-section of the whole of Chopins creativity from Polonaise B WN1, being his first surviving compositional attempt for the Polonaise-Fantasy op.61, which belongs to the group of masterpieces crowning his last creative period. The collective publication of his Polonaises till now, which present them in the order of finding and publication gives, from this perspective, a totally chaotic impression. [from source commentary]. Includes Polonaises: in B flat major, G minor, A flat major, G sharp minor, D minor, F minor, B flat minor, G flat major.

The Polonaises, Op. 40 belong to that later group. They comprise two works: a Polonaise in A major and a Polonaise in C minor. These two works comprise the second opus of piano polonaises to be published by Chopin, and they form a powrful contrastwith one another, representing two varietes of the heroic polonaise: the triumphant and the tragic. They also mark a further stage in the evolution of the polonaise: on the hand, in the direction of monumentalisation; on the other, towards a gradualweakening of its dance features, so that the dance in transformed into a kind of dance fantasy.

Richard Wagner's Polonaise for Piano, edited by Arthur D. Walker.
Editorial note:
This Polonaise and Trio in D major for Piano solo was probably written as an excercise when Wagner was studying under Theodor Weinlig in 1830.
Wagner described to Edward Dannreuther much later in his life the teaching methods of Weinlig (Grove I, iv, 347; Musical Times, January 1973, Page 26) The pencil corrections on the autograph, part of which is reproduced in the above-mentioned issue of The Musical Times, may be in Weinlig's hand. The Polonaise was rejected by Wagner, the Trio transformed into a Piano duet, and a new Polonaise for Piano duetwas composed.

In the leading part the stile brillant is displayed in a version most in agreement with its name - it is brilliant, showy and spectacular. The central section is in the character of a nocturne, Andante spinato, and creates a subtle mood that is destroyed by the stormy rhythms of the polonaise. This work is often performed without the orchestra - the Andante spinato was immediately prepared for piano solo. Critical source-edition edited by Jan Ekier and Pawel Kaminski based on manuscripts, copies approved by Chopin himself, and first editions. Its purpose is to present the works of Chopin in authentic form.
