The making of El Cimarron began in about 1986, with a conversation I had with Hans Magnus Enzensberger about the difficulties of writing political songs today that would go beyond the achievements of Eisler, Weill and Dessau in this field. It seemed to me that I might try to tackle the problem by writing a cycle with a variety of musical materials out of which perhaps something novel might emerge in a new and different context, almost by chance. The triangle is an idiophone type of musical instrument in the percussion family. It is a bar of steel bent into a triangle shape with one of the angles left open and with the ends of the bar not quite touching. Today, the shape of this instrument is generally in the form of an equilateral triangle, usually struck with a metal beater (or sometimes with a wooden beater) and giving a high-pitched, ringing tone. The triangle was historically used for religious ceremonies. Many classical and modern composers, such as Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, and Weber have used this instrument in their work. The famous classical work, Piano Concerto No.1 by Franz Liszt featured the triangle as a solo instrument in the third movement, giving this concerto the nickname Triangle Concerto. Having studied the flute with virtuosos Paul Taffanel, Adolphe Hennebains and Philippe Gaubert at the Paris Conservatoire, Marcel Moyse (1889-1984) soon became a virtuoso of the instrument himself. His editions of Soussmann's 24 Daily Studies for Flute is one of many popular study books compiled by the renowned flautist. During his career, Moyse frequently played solo flute with many orchestras, including performing the main concertos of the repertory. As well as performing and composing, Moyse was responsible for the training of a brilliant generation of flautists at the Paris Conservatoire. Following WWI, the composer moved to the United States where he continued to perform, compose and teach. It is during his time in the USA that Moyse composed his extensive number of instructive books on instrumental technique, including Soussmann's 24 Daily Studies, which today remain universally accepted and popular. Moyse's book is essential to all aspiring advanced flautists.

Performer’s interpretations of the monologues will of course be enriched by reading the novels, and by watching the movies they inspired.

Quoting Karen Tanaka: The title comes from the Song of Solomon of the Old Testament, which is a beautiful song of love. I have attempted to project this sensual song of love onto the sound of cello and computer. My intention was to weave color and scent into the sound while blending the ancient story and today's technology. The sound of cello is consistently gentle and tender. Born in Switzerland, Jean Xavier Lefevre (1763-1829) was a sought-after clarinetist and one of the first clarinet professors at the Paris Conservatory. He is still known today for his Clarinet School (1802), which became a standard work in France and beyond. From this textbook comes the popular Sonata no. 1 with its catchy melody that encourages light playfulness. The piece is graded hereas level 2. Also available: Sonata No. 2 g minor (SE 1039). Lefevre wrote the piece originally for the then common C-Clarinet. For use in the classroom, this edition omits the transposition ofthe clarinet part into the B tuning. The accompanying bass voice of the original was transferred to the piano and supplemented with some suggestions on dynamics and articulation. Hints and tips from publisher Rudolf Mauz (Die frohliche Klarinette) offer students assistance in the preparation of the work. This edition is part of the Schott Student Edition series, which offers a diverse repertoire of lessons, concerts and exams of varying degrees of difficulty (from easy to difficult).
