The journey from Advent to Christmas is filled with vivid images of beloved traditions: the lighting of candles and Christmas trees as the light of Christ glows with increasing intensity; decorations of evergreens, symbols of the promise of rebirth; the emergence of stars atop the trees to guide the pilgrim journey; the presentation of gifts in celebration of God's great gift to us all. Throughout the centuries, believers have sung carols that celebrate these traditions, and A Garland of Carols combines these elements. It includes five suites, one for each Sunday in Advent and a fifth for Christmas Eve. Each includes an opening carol for choir and a closing medley for choir and optional congregation, as well as narratives for candle-lighting and inspired stories and scriptures for that suite's theme. The flexible choral texture makes it ideal as a one-rehearsal program for larger choirs or as an easily rehearsed program for smaller ensembles.

The arrangements come from the playing of Davey Graham, Pat Kirtley, Tony McManus, John Renbourn, John Fahey, Sandy Shalk, Dave Evans, Martin Carthy, El McMeen, Leo Wijnkamp and Stefan Grossman. The music ranges from the medieval La Rotta to Willie Brown?s Future Blues from the deep Mississippi delta; from O?Carolan?s Lord Inchiquin to Waterbound, an old-time folksong. From Celtic airs and jigs to gospel and blues you will explore the world of tunings. Hopefully, this collection will help you to discover new approaches and techniques to playing your instrument. Along the way you?ll have fingerpicking challenges and fun.

The age-old story of our Lord’s birth, retold each year around the world, is made more real and more deeply felt when experienced through the beloved carols of this season of joy. Dale Wood’s organ settings of such carols have been re-imagined for chorus by Douglas E. Wagner in this work that can be effective as a service of lessons and carols, a Christmas cantata, or a carol collection for service or concert use. While there is a fair amount of nostalgia associated with these treasured tunes and texts, let not these feelings obscure our primary view as we strive to tread the true path this blessed time of year. As we each, in our own way, make our pilgrimage to the Babe lying in a manger, let us instead refocus our hearts and minds and Come Now to Bethlehem.
