Playing in a duo is great fun for professional musicians and amateurs alike and can inspire creative music making. These pieces represent encounters between two people, with each of the nine compositions taking a specific moment or mood as its theme. Titles and indications of style and tempo will give performers ideas for interpretation, with markings relating to technique, articulation, bowing and fingerings offered for guidance. For players who would like to work out their own interpretation of these Dialogues, the second section of the book includes an unmarked score of the same pieces (with no indications of dynamics, fingerings, bowings, articulation or phrasing). This additional score is intended for use by instrumental teachers who wish to work with their pupils on marking up and arranging pieces of music for string instruments.These Dialogues are aimed at young people and adult musicians, too. They may be played as a cycle in the order given in this book, or else combined at will. Individual Dialogues may serve as useful teaching material, for student auditions or for inclusion in student concerts or chamber performances. Their musical content and brevity make these duets particularly suitable repertoire for youth music competitions. The overall duration of the set of Dialogues is about fifteen minutes.

The clarinettist Irith Gabriely was inspired by her love of Barbara Heller's Dialogues (for violin and viola) to arrange these duets for two Bb clarinets. The result is a set of varied concertante dialogues that present clarinettists with a few challenges, requiring stamina, breath control, intense and contrasting dynamics, chromatic passages, whole tone passages, sensitive tone production, leaps across wide intervals, fast playing, disciplined rhythmic control and listening to one another closely. In this edition all tempo indications and dynamic markings are intended for guidance: these duets may equally well be interpreted in other ways. This edition therefore also includes a second section where all the pieces are reproduced without such markings, ready for individual interpretation. The Dialogues lend themselves very well to chamber performances; they are also short enough to serve as brief interludesat readings or exhibitions. Their expressive qualities, brevity and range of musical and technical demands make them highly suitable material for youth music competitions. A flute or oboe might well be played with the clarinet as alternative instrumentation for these duets (ED 22017).

Contemplation is the first movement from the Clarinet Concerto by Jan Van der Roost, which was commissioned by Musica Reservata VOF, Belgium, and is dedicated to the famous clarinet soloist Eddy Vanoosthuyse. A slightly mysterious intro leads to an orchestral climax with ascending melodies and the entrance of the soloist. This occurs at first with fragmentary musical ideas, and then with longer melodic lines. The orchestra delivers the dialogue withthe soloist, and creates a fitting musical frame with a delicate and colourful instrumentation. Towards the end of the music, the atmosphere from the beginning is restored, and the soloist finishes on the same note that he started the piece on. The concerto is also available as a piano reduction. Contemplation is het eerste deel uit het Clarinet Concerto van Jan Van der Roost. Het werd geschreven in opdracht van Musica Reservata VOF (B) en is opgedragen aan Eddy Vanoosthuyse. Een ietwat mysterieuze intro leidt via stijgende melodieën tot een eerste orkestrale climax, waarna de solist zijn intrede doet, eerst met vooral fragmentarische muzikale gegevens, dan met langere melodische lijnen.
