This movement, the Melodrama takes place in Act II, intimately scored only for strings. Pathétique-Peter Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) composed the 6th Symphony between February and August 1893. The first performance in St Petersburg on 16 October 1893 at the First Symphony Concert of the Russian Musical Society was conducted by the composer. Tchaikovsky subsequently added the title Pathétique to the work. The first performance of the 6th Symphony in Moscow on 4 December 1893 after the death of the composer at the Second Symphony Concert of the Russian Musical Society was conducted by Vasili Safonov. The work is dedicated to Vladimir Lvovich Davidov the son of Tchaikovsky's sister. This edition prepared by the Russian composer and musicologist Viktor Ekimovsky is based onearlier publications and contains editorial comments with regard to printing errors and slips of the composer's pen.

Tchaikovsky is best known for his purely instrumental compositions. However we must not underestimate him as a composer of operas. Many of his operas such as ¬Pique Dame and Eugene Onegin are still performed regularly throughout the world. Eugene Onegin (also called Jevgeny Onegin) composed in 1877-1878 was not called an opera by Tchaikovsky himself but ?lyric scenes?. The work is entirely dominated by lyricism. However there are two moments that contrast sharply with this lyricism: two ball scenes for which Tchaikovsky wrote a waltz and a polonaise.After opening with a less well-known allegro dansant this arrangement features the aforementioned waltz which can beconsidered a beautiful Russian equivalent of the Faust Waltz by Charles Gounod. In the opera this waltz is actually played by a military band. The arrangement concludes with the pompous polonaise (also mentioned above) which opens the last act: the ideal music to characterize high aristocracy in the salon of a palace in St. Petersburg.

Tchaikovsky's Souvenir De Florence was commissioned by the St. Petersburg Chamber Music Society in 1887 but the work was not finished until 1892 due to Tchaikovsky turning his attention to his opera Queen of Spades. It has been observed that the final movement in particular is orchestrally conceived rather than in the style of chamber music. The work is fittingly often performed by string orchestras and many believe it to actually more effective in that format. This is the original setting of the piece for String Sextet - 2 Violins 2 Violas and 2 Cellos.

Based on Alexander Dumas' adaptation of E. T. A. Hoffman's story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, the ballet premiered in December of 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Tchaikovsky selected eight pieces from the ballet and created The Nutcracker Suite, which became an immediate success and to this day remains one of the most popular ballets, and contains some of the best-loved Christmas music. This suite of three selected short movements scored especially for beginners includes 'March,' 'Dance of the Reed Flutes,' and 'Russian Dance (Trepak).'
