For SATB and piano, this original setting of Maya Angelou's poem, Prayer is in a soulful 6/8. (The accompaniment occasionally quotes Lift Every Voice and Sing, which gives you an idea of the tempo and feeling.) Beginning with a series of thanks, the piece has a slower middle section with a series of petitions, beginning, For those who have no voice, we ask you to speak. Then the music of the first section reappears and the piece closes with a prayer for peace. This is an unusual and powerful musical offering for any occasion focusing on justice and social concerns.

A mostly unison song with a reggae feel that follows the textual pattern of many a reggae song - i.e., the verses each cite a particular evil followed by a plea for an end to its power over people. A strong social justice message that needs to continually be on the lips of the church. For cantor or soloist

Psalms 130, 120.
The texts for Prayer for Peace are excerpted from Psalms 130 and 120 and from the Agnus Dei of the Mass Ordinary. The word peace appears randomly throughout the work in a variety of languages in an attempt to illustrate its cultural universality. Performers and conductors can decide on their own how to render these passages. If available, the song bowls in D and A will add rich sonorities, but the piece can be performed effectively without them.

This original song, written in the style of a gospel spiritual, incorporates universal themes of hope, change, humankind, and peace. An earnest text delivers an important message about the past, present, and future of social justice. Alternating pronouns and symbolic vocabulary allow for interpretation and invite discussion. Traditional Amazing Grace is a profound highlight in the middle of this one of a kind, standout selection.

The text is based on a poem written on a cellar wall in Germany by Jewish children hiding from the Nazis and delivers an intense belief of love and peace. Though fitting to be performed by two-part children's choir, it may also be sung by women's voices.
