Das Da pacem, Domine schrieb ich im Jahr 1982 zunächst für fünf Chöre, Orgel und Gemeinde. Ich widmete es dem Gedenken der barbarischen Sprengung der Leipziger Universitätskirche durch den Beschluss des Politbüros der SED und die darauffolgende Entscheidung der damaligen Universitätsleitung. Bei der Uraufführung auf der Sommerreise des 'Leipziger Vokalkreises' ließ ich mich durch Michael Gläser vertreten, da ich zur selben Zeit die Chance hatte, am Mozarteum in Salzburg einen Dirigierkurs zu belegen.Da das Werk den Chorsängern etwas Mühe machte, nannten sie es Strapazem. / Choeur Et Orgue

This large-scale three-movement work commissioned by Ray Cramer and the Indiana University Wind Ensemble embodies the transformation of silence into sound. The opening movement is sparse utilizing mallet percussion harp andpiano to create a floating sense of timelessness. Featuring extensive solo flute this floating texture gradually builds over several minutes ultimately launching itself into a grandiose warm harmonically consonant blanket ofsound. The second movement continues the focus on solo flute and again opens slowly gradually gaining momentum but at a faster pace than in the first movement. The music spirals upward and outward but instead of reaching aplateau winds itself out and comes to a grinding halt in the upper range of the ensemble. Five brief solemn chords conclude the movement which immediately erupts into Movement III music of unceasing unsettling motion propelled by a driving ostinato which is repeatedly interrupted by bittersweet moments of lyricism all the while pushing toward an unforgiving climax. The movements may also be performed separately. There is no explicit narrativeto the piece though many particular elements do have personal quasi-biographical significance. Pro Pace Motets for Unaccompanied Chorus is a set of three motets using text from three medieval writers to explore the theme of peace. The music incorporates early modes as well as making effective use of free atonality all with a thorough grounding in compositional structure. Each of the movements for unaccompanied Chorus has slightly different voicing SAATBB SATB and SSATBB which should satisfy an ambitious Chorus. The first movement Libera Plebem transforms a medieval prayer for deliverance from the Black Death into a more general prayer for deliverance from destruction. The second movement is a Lament for the invention of weaponry. The third movement O TristiaSecla Priora celebrates Christ’s ultimate non-violent victory.John Joubert is a contemporary composer of South African birth who has lived worked and taught in the UK for the whole of his adult life. He is particularly celebrated for his Choral works though his oeuvre includes symphonies operas chamber music and other works.

It was commissioned by Mstislav Rostropovich for the National Symphony Orchestraof Washington and is dedicated to Charles Münch. This work for Orchestra lasts approximately 20 minutes and depicts the content of the painting. It is scored for a full Orchestra without Violins or Violas. The Cellos serve to represent space, with swirling solos alongside calmer sections, while thelack of Violins and Violas epitomises for the quiet and motionless sections of the painting. The solo of the Wind instruments and Drums characterizes the clouds and the light of the moon and stars. It is divided into two parts: 1. Nébuleuse (Nebula) and 2. Constellations, which are divided by a Cello interlude.
