A bold, forceful and solid overture with lots of appeal! The strong outer sections in D minor contrast very nicely with the lyrical center section in Bb Major, providing you with a composition which will show off your band at its best!! Individual parts are very accessible and playable, giving the illusion of being more difficult than it really is.

As the title suggests, Spanish Overture has a strong Spanish character. The music in this overture is full of quintessential Spanish colours. Following a fluid and spontaneous development which moves between major and minor keys, a slow passage with a calm and peaceful melodic line is presented. The finale of this passionate work recalls the initial theme now presented in all its splendour.

This energetic overture opens strongly with the low brass presenting a melodic arpeggio motive that recurs throughout the A section of the piece. The B section provides an excellent contrast with an expressive presentation by the woodwinds leading to a sensitive chorale setting. With shifting minor and major modes, the section builds with the brass before ending in a tranquil manner. A repeat of the opening section leads to a dynamic coda, bringing the piece to an exciting conclusion. This is well written educational material that plays at the more technical end of this grade level. -The Instrumentalist.

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov completed this programmatic overture in the spring of 1888 and dedicated it to the memory of two of his friends who were also prolific Russian composers: Modest Mussorgsky and Alexander Borodin. He utilized original melodies and traditional melodies from liturgical chants of the Russian Orthodox Church. His brilliance as an orchestrator was showcased in this large work for full orchestra and included multiple time and key signatures in addition to various solos and cadenzas. This arrangement stays true to the original key signatures and includes all main melodic and harmonic voices and structure in a continuous performance that is accessible and challenging. Care should be shown to the changes in meter, tempo and key signatures along with techniques such as divisi and tremolo. Subdivision and counting can be reinforced throughout this piece. In addition, suggested fingerings have been given to help navigate chromatic and shifting portions of this arrangement. Enjoy performing this arrangement of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s masterpiece.

This overture is the opening of the 146th Church Cantata. It is scored for full string orchestra with organ obbligato and is the original form of the first movement of the later and better known Piano Concerto in D minor. In its early form this work lends itself more readily to a modern piano adaptation than in the later Concerto form.

From Henry Purcell's semi-opera King Arthur comes this wonderful arrangement in the style of the French Overture. The piece begins with a strong statement filled with regal and stately dotted rhythms. A lively fugue follows in which all sections play an equal role as they explore independent playing. Written in the key of D minor, shifting is required for first violin and bass while cello uses extensions. An excellent study in Baroque bow style!
