An influential early Romantic composer for piano John Field (1782-1837) redefined the term 'nocturne.' Field's dreamy poetic style exerted a lasting effect on such later composers as Chopin Liszt and Schumann. This collection brings together the most popular and often performed of Field's nocturnes along with a selection of his most important solo piano works.

The music of Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) is an important link between the innovations of late Romanticism and the experimentation of the early 20th century. A student of Saint-Saëns he in turn taught Ravel and was a mentor to the young modernists of Les Six. These 12 nocturnes and 12 barcarolles composed over a span of 40 years document his move from Romanticism to the frontiers of 20th-century music. Reprinted from authoritative French editions.

In accordance with the tradition of the genre, these are characterised by sentimentality, intimacy and programmatic tendencies. Characteristic for them is a turbulent middle section and a richly ornamented reprise.
