“The Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh is the composer's inspiration for this choral, which is filled imagery from the painting. The text is created from a quote by Van Gogh, “For my part, I know nothing with any certainly, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.” The composer has included discussion points about the painting and choral that can be used in rehearsal or classroom. Incredible teaching opportunities abound!

In 2014, I enjoyed a wonderful residence at the Ucross Foundation in Clearmont,Wyoming. Ucross is an artist colony that gives writers, composers, and visual artists thegift of time, space, and support to follow their artistic pursuits; we are provided withstudio space, housing, and meals so that we can work continuously on our projects. I havebeen in residence at numerous artist colonies; however, nothing in my previousexperiences prepared me for living in such isolated, wild country. Ucross is situated on a20,000-acre cattle ranch at nearly 4,000 feet in elevation with fewer than 150 peopleliving within the town. But what Clearmont lacks in population, it makes up forabundantly and spectacularly in wilderness and wildlife. I composed the sextet Postcardsfrom Wyoming to offer three glimpses of what I found to be the most striking aspects ofmy residence. The Solitude of Stars, the third and final movement of the original sextet, was inspired by the stunning nightly display of the heavens above. Without city lightsdimming the night sky, countless stars shone brightly over the vast expanse of the prairie. This edition is part of The Solitude of Stars Project that I undertook during the 2020COVID-19 pandemic, which consists of a series of arrangements that I made forcolleagues and friends. In 2014, I enjoyed a wonderful residence at the Ucross Foundation in Clearmont, Wyoming. Stars was born out of a life-long fascination with the night sky, and the text is a meditation on the interconnectedness of creation. The light from distant stars takes eons to reach our eyes, connecting us with an ancient past. Many elements that comprise our bodies were cast out of stars million years ago. Since we are the stuff of stars, where will we cast our own light? Whose world will we impact? Harmonically, the piece seeks to evoke the vastness and mystery of space, simultaneously capturing the intimacy of connection. Stars Legacies of light Ages ago, you spun light into the bleak Ancient light falls on my eye And I? A star sacred stellar dust casting light out through time In whose sky will my light fall?  .Stars was born out of a life-long fascination with the night sky, and the text is a meditation on the interconnectedness of creation. This Grade 2 original work was inspired by the tender poem of the same name by Sara Teasdale. Gentle phrases capture the wistful hope the poet felt as she contemplated the steadfast stars that burn steadily as long ago even as the world changed below. The lyrical melody provides developing players opportunities to work on tone, slurs, and expressive playing with one easy key change from D major to G major. A shift from major to minor tonality reflects the bittersweet stanzas that lament the loss of youthful dreams amidst the turmoil of life, even while admiring the faithful beauty of the celestial constellations. The dreamy piece evokes images of shimmering stars in the cold December night, with shadows shaken on the snow, offering a tranquil winter concert selection. This Grade 2 original work was inspired by the tender poem of the same name by Sara Teasdale.
