George Butterworth was born in London on July 12th 1885 to a well-to-do family. Eton School was followed by university at Trinity College Oxford where he met Vaughan Williams and Cecil Sharp. He taught for a while at Radley studied for a short time at the Royal College of Music then concentrated more or less full time on collecting folk songs sometimes with Vaughan Williams. When the First World War started in 1914 he joined the Durham Light Infantry as a Lieutenant. In the trenches he was mentioned in dispatches for outstanding courage and won the Military Cross. He led a successful raid on August 15th 1916 in the Battle of the Somme but during the raidButterworth was killed by a sniper's bullet.Much of his music is influenced by folk-song. The idyll 'Banks of Green Willow' is one of his best works and perfectly captures the nature of the English countryside. This arrangement has been made from the original orchestration for full orchestra and incorporates the cuts authorized by the composer in 1963. The piano duet part is optional unless no wind is available. The brass parts are fully cued in both string and woodwind parts. The minimum wind required is 1 flute 1 oboe and 2 clarinets. The theme from the film 'The Big Country' is surely the epitome of 'Western' music: you can see the cowboys the cattle the arid landscape the waggons spread out before you! Jerome Moross wrote a large amount of music but nothing that quite matched up to the brilliance of this piece. Arranged here for full orchestra by Richard Ling. The composer states that'the piece begins with a slowly falling scale of seven notes, thrown from one player to another, repeated nine times and embellished with ornamental flurries which outline a gradually evolving harmonic pattern. The repetitive nature of the music is like a peal of bells or some other kind of evocation. Eventually the music breaks out of this cyclic inevitability and heads into a faster dance-like material which in turn develops its own ritualistic recurrences.?
