The volumes in this new series contain duos, trios and quartets, their degree of difficulty ranging from easy through intermediate to advanced. Every piece is a transcription or an arrangement, since in editing the volumes our primary concern was to provide a collection of valuable and interesting compositions, as freely variable as possible as regards instrumentation, for music school students and also for adults who make music for their own pleasure. The range and pitch of the parts enable the works to be performed on any required or possible combination of the given instruments. The volume for advanced music students offers real treats (Chopin's Mazurka, Schumann'sTräumerei). The technical and musical difficulties do not exceed the level of a well-trained and experienced amateur musician, and the luxurious possibilities of variations in the arrangements for four parts for the various instrument families (strings, wind, percussion) offer collective music making for homogeneous or mixed ensembles. Special features are Anna's Polka by Johann Strauss Jr. and Joplin's Ragtime, which enrich the repertoire of chamber music with new colour.

Lev KoganKlezmer Dance Suite for clarinet, strings, percussion, and tubaarranged by Alan Kaufman, with cadenzas by Gene KavadloScore and one copy each partI have been Principal Clarinetist with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, North Carolina, since 1975. My interest in klezmer music began in 1984 when I realized how unique the clarinet voice can be in the klezmer idiom - it is totally different from playing in a symphony orchestra, and I found that unique voice to be very appealing. I formed a quartet called Viva Klezmer!, and we have been concertizing and recording ever since.I discovered Lev Kogan's Hassidic Tunes for Clarinet and Piano a number of years ago and was struck by the lovely melodies and harmonies that Mr. Kogan had composed. The tunes were always enjoyed by audiences whenever I performed them, and it occured to me that several of them could be orchestrated and grouped together to form a very attractive klezmer suite. I enlisted the aid of my talented colleague, Alan Kaufman, and the result is this publication. There is dearth of klezmer music featuring clarinet with orchestra or chamber ensemble, and this publication helps fill that void. The suite can be performed with orchestra or, if percussion and tuba are unavailable, as chamber music with clarinet and strings. In the absence of tuba, the part may be played by another bass instrument.Gene KavadloLev Kogan (1927-2007) was born in Baku, Azerbaijan, and immigrated to Israel in 1972. Kogan attended the Moscow State Conservatory from 1946-1952 where he studied piano and was a composition of Aram Khatchturian. He has devotred much time to the research, creation and performance of Jewish music. In Israel, he has composed many productions for the Yiddish theater and Chassidic, Yiddish songs and chamber music.Originally from New York State, Alan Kaufman graduated from Potsdam State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and a Master's Degree in Music Performance in Percussion. Since then, he has been a performer, arranger, educator, producer and composer of commercial jingles, recordings and movie and television soundtracks. He has produced albums and/or has arranged for an array of groups from The Buddy Rich Band to performing with artists as diverse as Luciano Pavoratti and Bernadette Peters, to Dave Brubeck and Johnny Cash. Since 1978, Alan has resided in Charlotte, NC where he continues his musical journey.

Pavel Haas was one of Leoš Janácek’s most gifted students. His String Quartet No. 2 “From the Monkey Mountains†is considered to be one of the first high points of his oeuvre. In this work, Haas combined elements of Janácek’s compositional technique with jazz, particularly in the fourth movement’s instrumentation for string quartet and percussion ad libitum. This version was premiered in Brno in 1926; later, the work was revised for string quartet only. For this edition Ondrej Pivoda has reconstructed the original version, bringing to light passages that were never published until now. This is the first critical edition of the work. It is based on all relevant sources, taking sketches of the final version of the score and contemporary performance material into account. It includes an extensive Foreword (Cz/Eng/Ger) as well as a Critical Commentary (Eng).

Commissioned by the Mavron Quartet for its tenth anniversary, with funds from the PRS for Music foundation's Women Make Music award, Rhian Samuel's Threaded Light presents a novel take on the string-quartet genre. Two of its movements include a percussive element played by members of the ensemble, with an optional percussion part for a fifth player. In addition, the unusual seven-movement structure arises from two elements: the idea of a thread, continuous, stretched or broken; and, contrasting with this notion, the influence of pictorial imagery in the slow, evocative second and sixth movements ('Late Sun' and 'Estuary by Moonlight') inspired by the impression of light passing through clouds near the composer's home on the hills above Aberdyfi in mid-Wales. Deriving from shared material, three abstract, prelude-like movements entitled 'Twine' (Nos. 1, 4 and 7) act as the 'thread' that binds the work into a whole, placing the cloudscapes and the similarly luminous percussion-based inventions, No. 3, 'Glinting Stars' and No. 5, 'Foxtrot Gleam', within the framework of an overall and satisfying symmetry.

All In One for 3 String Quartets was composed by Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen in 2013 (String Quartet No.12,13 and 14 played simultaneously). Gudmundsen-Holmgreen has written a collection of three new string quartets: String Quartet no. 12, ‘Each in Each’; String Quartet no. 13, ‘Mutual Ordering’, and String Quartet no. 14, ‘Well-Tuned Sounds’. Each quartet can be played on its own; they can also played simultaneously in any combination. When all three quartets are played together, as they are tonight, the combined work is titled All in One. About this collection, Gudmundsen-Holmgreenwrites: 'Some years ago Kronos and the vocal group Theatre of Voices performed three new pieces, which I had written for the two groups: one for Theatre of Voices (Green), and two for Kronos (New Ground and No Ground). They were played and sung by each group independently – but also both groups together concurrently, on top of each other, as a final gesture. The combined pieces were called New Ground Green and No Ground Green. 'David liked the idea (and the result) of pairs of quartets that could be played both independently and simultaneously, and asked me if the vocal quartet could be transformed into a string quartet. It could not. He then asked me to repeat the whole set-up with a new pair of quartets, adding also some percussion instruments, as was the case with Green for Theatre of Voices. Of course this was tempting. Furthermore David asked me to make one of the two new quartets a little easier to play. 'I began to work. The Kronos part of the pair of quartets turned out to be tough to play, as David puts it. Unfortunately the ‘easier’ one was tough to play also! So I had to write one more, which was then a little easier still (but still not easy). 'The three new works can be played separately and on top of each other in many different combinations, resulting in different kinds of.
