Sir Arthur Bliss (1891-1975) was a British composer and conductor. He studied under Wood and Stanford at Cambridge and the Royal College of Music, where he met and drew inspiration from Vaughan Williams, Holst, Howells, and Goossens. He was appointed Master of the Queen's Music in 1953 and wrote music for many state occasions, including the Coronation and the Funeral of Winston Churchill.
The String Quartet No.1 in Bb Major was first published in 1941. It was actually the third String Quartet Bliss composed, but the first two were early works which he withdrew or lost. It was written in America in 1940 and first performed inBerkeley, California; it became the last work he wrote before he returned to Britain to help the war effort.

This piece was commissioned by Matsudo Citizen Wind Orchestra for their 30th anniversary concert and premiered by the band conducted by Kenichiro Hasunuma in July 2009. This piece is typical of Satoshi Yagisawa in that it depicts a magnificent spectacle. This one is set in ancient Egypt and is based on the story depicted in the famous film The Ten Commandments (1956, directed by Cecil B. DeMille). One day Moses, who was raised by the rich royal family, found out that he was originally Hebrew. The Hebrews had been forced to live as slaves. Ramses, the prince directly descended from the Pharaoh, envied Moses' strength and popularity. After internal argument Moses decides todeliver the Hebrew from the Pharaoh's tyranny and escape from Egypt with them. The music starts with brilliant royal fanfare and depicts magnificent architecture, the Hebrew people forced into hard labour, and the slaves escaping from the Pharaoh's tyranny. At the climax they are at crisis point, trapped by the sea. Moses waves his staff and the miracle happens; the sea parts and Hebrew people successfully escape. Following on from Perseus - A Hero's Quest in the Heavens, this work Moses and Ramses is another piece written in the dramatic style favoured by Satoshi Yagisawa.

After Giulio Cesare and Tamerlano , Rodelinda is the third masterly opera that Handel composed between December 1723 and January 1725. The words were written by Nicola Haym , the author of many other Handel librettos. The first performance took place at the King’s Theatre in the Haymarket, London , on 13 February 1725. Rodelinda thrives entirely on the ethical supremacy of conjugal love, and thus prefigures the great operas by Gluck and Beethoven on the same subject. The plot is taken from the history of the Lombard royalty. Oskar Hagen’s revival of Rodelinda in 1920 ushered in the modern Handel opera movement. The work forms the climax to a series of dramatic masterpieces that includes Handel’s most significant operas. Handel returned to Rodelinda on two occasions, in December 1725 and in May 1731. Many far-reaching changes were necessary owing to the different skills of the new singers. For example, Handel wrote three new arias and a duet for the first revival. Yet the changes he made for this performance, doubtless to accommodate the needs and wishes of the singers, also improve the work’s dramatic substance. Our vocal score is based on the Urtext of the full score published in the Halle Handel Edition (II/16) and reproduces the various alternative readings and versions in an appendix.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was paid three guineas for the publishing rights to his Suite de Pièces by Schott & Co. London on 24 December 1892 when the composer was just 17 years old. In the following year the work was published by Schott Music's German office in versions for both violin with piano and violin with organ. Coleridge-Taylor was born in London and brought up in Croydon. He learnt to play the violin, was recognized as a child prodigy and at 15 was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music with Charles Villiers Stanford, where he was a contemporary of Holst and Vaughan Williams. Coleridge-Taylor described himself Anglo-African and, despite support from his colleagues, faced racism throughout his whole career. In spite of this prejudice and his tragically early death in 1912 aged just 37, he enjoyed great success during his lifetime and his music was performed at the Proms no less than 116 times between 1898 and 1939. In contrast, since 1940 his music has only been heard there on eleven occasions. Like many works, at some point in the past Suite de Pièces became out of print. Schott Music is very proud to present this new modern performing edition of the version for violin and piano. Errors and inconsistencies from the first edition have now been corrected.

At the time both companies occupied offices on Great Marlborough Street, London. Coleridge-Taylor was born in London and brought up in Croydon. This motet for soprano, strings and basso continuo, is the only one by Vivaldi to be preserved outside Italy. It is included in two manuscript collections in London: a set of parts in the Royal College of Music and a score in the British Library. The structure is the conventional one of two arias enclosing a short recitative and followed by a brilliant Alleluia. The incompleteness of the sources (the second evidently copied from the first) is of a rather unusual kind. The existing score comprises a vocal part, an instrumental bass and a first violin part. However, it is clear that there was originally at least one middle part (probably two, to match all the other surviving Vivaldi motets), since the bass part pauses frequently, and on these occasions the first violin part continues as an “upper” voice, not as a bass of the harmony. In the reconstruction, inner parts for second violin and viola have been added by the editor. The task was not difficult, since many passages find close parallels elsewhere in Vivaldi's music. The separate parts include a realization of the continuo by the editor.
