Both incidentally belong to the final year of his life. The Clarinet Concerto is in the conventional three movements with music that transcends conventionality in its remarkable sense of repose and serenity and what Bernhard Paumgartner has called 'its incredible warmth of tone perfectbalance and unmatched perfection of style.' The concerto had a tremendous resurgence in popularity with the release of the Academy-Award-winning 1985 film Out of Africa of which the piece formed a major element. This deluxe 2-CD set includes the concerto in its original key with printed parts for both A and B-flat clarinets and adds a repitched version for B-flat clarinetists allowing players of that instrument easier execution plus the ability to learn the same fingerings as the composer's intended A clarinet for performance purposes. Clarinet Quintet in A major K. 581-Ever since Mozart encountered the Clarinet in Mannheim in 1778 he loved the instrument?s warm and expressive tone. His friendship with Anton Stadler the clarinetist in the Royal-Imperial Court Orchestra in Vienna prompted him to compose not only the Clarinet Concerto (K. 622) but also this ?Quintet of Quintets? which was written two years before his death. Like almost all his works for the Clarinet this Quintet wasprobably intended originally for the Basset Clarinet. However it survives only in two posthumous prints both of which call for a standard Clarinet. These prints form the basis of our edition. As an added bonus the appendixcontains a fragmentary Allegro in Bb major for the same combination of instruments.

Sometimes referred to as the Stadler Quintet Clarinet Quintet KV 581 is Mozart's only completed Clarinet Quintet and was written in 1789 for the clarinetist Anton Stadler.   This idyllic flowing piece was originally written for basset Clarinet but is almost always played on a Clarinet in A or B-flat. It remains to this day one of the composer's most admired works.   The work is arranged here for Clarinet and Piano.
