Ilmari Hannikainen (1892-1955) was the most important Finnish pianist during the first decades of the 1900s. In his lifetime he also was one of the country's most famous composers. Hannikainen studied composition with Erkki Melartin, Franz Schreker and Maximilian Steinberg. His piano techers include Elli Rangman-Bjorlin and Alexander Siloti. Piano Sonata C minor Op. 1 was completed in 1912, and is one of the largest-scale romantic piano compositions in the Finnish piano repertoire. The work is a joyride of flowing national romanticsm filled with youthful energy. Some technical influence from Chopin and Liszt is evident, as is from master Sibelius, the major figure in Finnish music at the time. The Piano Sonata is published now for the first time - and directly as an Urtext edition. Pianist Dmus Risto-Matti Marin and music engraver Jani Kyllonen have studied all surviving manuscript sources, resulting in a worthy edition of this great work for piano.

Five multi-movement trios for piano and two string instruments by Sibelius are known from the years 1883-1888. The large trios, such as the Havtrask and Korpo Trio (JS 207, JS 209), were written for the classical piano trio scoring of violin, violoncello and piano. Apparently, Sibelius kept composing trios to play among his family and friends, having in mind to be one of the musicians himself. Chamber music was an essential part of social life. When listening to Sibelius' trios, one cannot help but notice that the repertoire included many works of Viennese Classicism.Although Sibelius's feelings towards his youthful works were not exactly uncomplicated, Sibelius biographer Otto Andersson later reported that the master, in later years, missed [the Korpo Trio] very much and would have been very pleased to see [it] preserved.First edition of this early work.

Sibelius secured his international reputation as a 20th-century classic above all with his large orchestral works. However, his vocal works, including the songs for voice and orchestra, are just as important and innovative. They combine Sibelius's masterful command of the orchestral apparatus with a uniquely sensitive feeling for the textual sources. They range from the dramatic ballad Koskenlaskijan morsiamet Op. 33 to the intimate, lyrical Arioso Op. 3, and from the post-Wagnerian Serenad JS 183 (presented here for the first time) to the boldly orchestrated vision Luonnotar Op. 70. Following the two books of songs with piano accompaniment, this volume of the Sibelius Complete Edition (JSW) will definitely make an important contribution to the international reception of Sibelius' works.

The present volume of the Complete Edition comprises a truly homogenous group: all the piano works from the Ten Piano Pieces op. 58 to the Treize Morceaux Op. 76. No doubt the best known pieces among them are the Three Sonatinas op. 67, which were played so masterfully (and were so highly esteemed) by Glenn Gould. All the pieces were written within the space of ten years, between 1909 and 1919, at a time when Sibelius was already an internationally renowned composer. He was, however, dependent on the smaller, short-term commissions and their honorariums for his livelihood. During World War I, it was impossible for Sibelius in Helsinki to maintain his contacts with the major European concert halls. This difficult situation also helped prompt the creation of the pieces written after 1914 and grouped by the composer and his Finnish publishers into the opp. 75 and 76.

Winterborn, a piece born during winter 2008, is composer Jennah Vainio's miniature symphony that as an experience exceeds its size of 10 players (wind quintet, string quartet and double bass) and length of 12 minutes. Vainio's instinct for musical dramaturgy is flawless. From the very first notes, it is clear that things are not only here and now - a far-reaching melody plan is being put into place. Jennah Vainio (born 1972) studied composition at the Helsinki University and at the Sibelius Academy. She has also participated in master courses by Magnus Lindberg, Jouni Kaipainen, Brian Ferneyhough, Olli Kortekangas and Sven-David Sandstrom. As a composer, Vainio feels that it is important to be versatile stylistically. Besides classical music she is known for her passion for metal and its sub genres. A guitarist herself, her first influences included the neoclassical metal guitarists Yngwie Malmsteen and Jason Becker.

The collection of the main solo songs by Armas Jarnefelt was accelerated by a donation made by his son, Arvi, in Stockholm to the University of Helsinki: dozens of previously unpublished manuscripts thus found their way home to Finland. Sweden was father Jarnefelt's second home, since he spent a couple of decades as conductor of the Royal Opera in Stockholm. He concentrated almost exclusively on solo songs, the reason no doubt being that his father-in-law was Jean Sibelius, a master of large-scale form. Jarnefelt's vocal lyrics spring from the National-Romantic ethos nurtured on the archaic rune-singing of the national epic, the Kalevala, and the distant lands of Karelia. The folk-like elements of his youthful songs were in time joined by Impressionistic and in places even Expressionistic timbres. This collection is edited by Matti Tuloisela.
