With a total duration of about 30 minutes, Schubert's Mass in B flat major (D 324), written in 1815, is considerably longer than Mozart's and Haydn's classical Brevis masses, and its large instrumental ensemble with strings, woodwinds, brass and timpani even gives it a clearly solemn character. Overall, Schubert was inspired by the late Haydn style of the symphonic mass (e.g., the division into six large movements, the omission of arias for the vocal soloists who are instead juxtaposed with the choir, singing short passages either singly or as a group) without, of course, achieving its temporal expansion. This is a representative, musically appealing work that excels with its multi-layered, detailed text treatment. It is, therefore, suitable for special occasions and the high feasts of the church year and can be mastered well by experienced church choirs. Among Haydn's over thirty settings of the Latin Ordinary, the Missa in honorem Sanctae Ursula occupies an outstanding position, which, according to the autograph, was completed on 5 August 1793. This Mass has been referred to as the most Mozartian of all his masses. With its song-like melodic character, the unity of the motivic material and the harmonius balance between festive and reflective sections this Mass is one of Haydn's most successful and inspired works. This work, which in addition to the usual Salzburg church trio includes two trumpets and timpani, belongs to the category of Missa solemnis. The popular nickname Chiemsee-Messe is bound up with the history of the origins of the work. Haydn wrote the Mass for the musically gifted nun, Sebastiana Oswald, who belonged to the Benedictine cloister of Frauenchiemsee. This work soon found widespread acceptance beyond the originally intended sphere of its origins, as is indicated by the numerous copies found in Austrian convents. During his lifetime Johann Sebastian Bach compiled an extensive music library, which today can only be reconstructed in a fragmentary manner. It reflects Bach's continued curiosity to learn about compositions of various styles and eras, a curiosity which was already present in his younger years and into his advanced age. The two complete masses and six individual movements from the Mass by Palestrina testify to Bach's interest in compositions from the 16th century. During his Weimar years Bach initially used these works to study the stile antico, with its characteristic voice leading and modal harmonies. In the last years of his life, Bach planned performances of at least two of the masses. In this connection he added instrumental parts and a basso continuo to these works. The Palestrina masses arranged by Bach comprise an important document for the performance practice in the 18th century of works in the strict style.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote the present Missa solemnis in C minor K. 139 (47a) in the fall of 1768 in Vienna, where the Waisenhaus church on the Rennweg was consecrated on 7 December 1768. Together with the Missa brevis in G K. 49 (47d) written at about the same time the work is one of the first Mass settings of the then 12-year-old composer.The first editions of both Masses were published by Breitkopf & Hartel in 1877 within the Complete Edition Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts Werke.

Prelude to Mastery The Missa Sanctissimae Trinitatis was probably composed within a few weeks in the late fall of 1736, an occasion for the composition is not recorded. Jan Dismas Zelenka's Missa Dei Filii is the second of three transmitted Missae ultimae, but consists, like other short masses of the 18th century, solely of a Kyrie and Gloria. Nevertheless, it is an extensive work, and the lengthy, multipartite Gloria is considered as the most impressive Gloria setting that Zelenka created in his over 20 masses. What remains to be answered is whether Zelenka had originally planned a complete mass composition.The full score and the piano vocal score are based on volume 100 of the Denkmaler edition Das Erbe deutscher Musik, in which the gaps in the musical text found in the autograph towards the end of the Gloria were cautiously supplemented. The Missa Omnium Sanctorum ZWV 21 is Zelenka's last mass setting. It contains three extended arias (one each for soprano, alto and tenor), concertante choruses and unusually expressive choral fugues. This first edition of a mass by Biber offers a new glimpse of the colourful and contrastful world of the Baroque. Since the publication of his Missa Salisburgensis in 1903, no mass with this kind of many-voice scoring has appeared in print. The thirty or so settings of the Mass by Johann Michael Haydn (Joseph's younger brother) are masterpieces of their class, and were greatly loved during his lifetime. As part of its Urtext complete edition Carus now presents the Missa Sancti Cyrilli et Methodii. This composition of 1758 is an early work, still written in the baroque stylistic tradition of the southern German region, Out it also reveals subjective inspiration which separates it from many mass settings by Haydn's contemporaries. With this mass dedicated to the Slavic apostles Cyrill and Methodius it is possible that Haydn applied for a position in Brno and it actually appears as if the 21-year-old composer wanted to present a masterpiece demonstrating his skills. The C Minor Mass K. 427 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is a fascinating work. But to speak of the Mass is inaccurate, for basically it is no more than a musical torso, full of enigmas and problems, yet full of magnificent music. It is hardly surprising that attempts have been made to create a performable version of Mozart's fragment since the 19th century. Depending on the date of reconstruction and background of the arranger, these attempts sound quite different, and often the individual style of the respective arranger can be clearly discerned. Now Frieder Bernius and Uwe Wolf have published a new edition of the Mozart mass which attempts to produce a performing version whilst maintaining the greatest respect for the available material, and without obscuring Mozart's musical manuscript with their own contributions. The joint version by Wolf, a renowned musicologist, and Bernius, an expert in historically-informed performance practice, is based on a thorough knowledge of Mozart's compositions, his notational habits, and church music practice of Mozart's day. At the same time it fully meets the requirements of today's performance practice.
