Originally a composition for chorus by Kevin A. Memley, this adaptation by Preston Hazzard makes expert use of the various tone colors available for band. Cascading waterfall effects are represented in the mallet percussion and woodwinds, while an underlying rhythmic texture provides a flowing background for the lyric melody. The piece builds nicely to a full band climax before returning to a quiet and delicate mood for the close. Duration: 4:10.

The Missa Beatissimae Virginis Maria was composed ca. 1758-1760, between the end of his tenure as a singer in the choir of St. Stephen's in Vienna and the beginning of his first position as violinist and music director for the Bishop of Grosswardein. The scoring of SATB (for soli as well as choir) and church trio was augmented by two trumpets (clarini) and timpani, as well as two trombones. The latter instruments double the alto and tenor voices in tutti passages but in the Et incarnatus est they are also employed in an obbligato role. On the one hand, as an early work this Mass is in the style of the festive baroque tradition, as practiced in south-German regions until the middle of the eighteenth century; on the other hand it already shows the subjective inspiration which distinguished it from many of the mass settings by Haydn's contemporaries. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Salzburg, where Leopold Mozart was Assistant Court Music Director, was a center for polyphonic Offertory settings and multimovement offertory concerti, which developed into a main genre of Catholic liturgical music in the south German region. The Salzburg Cathedral seems an obvious choice, which the solemn orchestration with trumpets and timpani would support. Schubertâ??s famous Ave Maria was originally titled Ellens dritter Gesang and was the sixth song in the Fräulein vom See song cycle (after The Lady of the Lake by Walter Scott). Later the Latin prayer Ave Maria was set to the melody, creating one of his most well-known sacred songs ever. In this arrangement the melody line can be played by either a solo trumpet or by the entire trumpet section. Either option creates a wonderful atmosphere that will entertain and enlighten your audience. This moving piece embodies all the simplicity of Russian Orthodox music, yet displays the sweeping beauty of Rachmaninov's lyricism. Conductors will appreciate the opportunity to teach extended phrases and legato style. Vespers is the sunset evening prayer of the Orthodox Church, and during the canonical hours of an all-night vigil, the Ave Maria would be sung at midnight, hence the 12 chime notes at the apex of the piece. For a special effect, the mallet parts can be doubled off-stage to simulate church bells. (2:40).

The best-known setting of the Requiem Mass before Mozart's unfinished work is by the celebrated opera composer Niccolo Jommelli. The Missa pro defunctis was composed in 1756, during Jommelli's time as Kapellmeister at the court of the Wurttemberg Duke Carl Eugen, on the occasion of the death of the Dowager Duchess Maria Augusta. The work went on to enjoy wide circulation and numerous further performances. Jommelli composed it in the Neapolitan style, with orchestral forces of just strings and basso continuo. The simple but effective choral movements are partly contrapuntal in the stile antico, and partly with solo/tutti alternation and numerous suspended dissonances, whilst in the solo parts the opera composer can be recognized. This beautiful sounding Missa pro defunctis is now published for the first time in a critical edition. Where sections are missing in Jommelli's composition, the Appendix contains settings by another composer from his circle, Nicola Sala. * The best-known setting of the Requiem Mass before Mozart * First critical edition * Effective choral movements with numerous suspended dissonances and solo/tutti alternation * Scored for small instrumental forces of strings and organ.
