De première van Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) vond plaats in 1791. Au courant de son périple, il retrouve Pamina dont il tombe éperdument amoureux. Mozart a composé l’ouverture de son dernier opéra deux jours avant la première. Elle débute avec un adagio suivi d’un allegro écrit sous la forme d’une fugue. Le passage central développe successivement trois groupes d’accords qui rappellent les premières mesures de l’ouverture.

This dashing work in one of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's more frequently heard German Dances (K. 605, No. 3), which he specifically titled The Sleigh Ride. The composition was originally written during the last year of Mozart's life in 1791. That year was one of his more productive years, composing other well known masterpieces such as The Magic Flute, Piano Concerto in B-Flat Major, The Concerto for Clarinet, and his very last composition, the Requiem which he finished only twelve of the fifteen sections before his death. The enigmatic title of Roger Zare’s overture is an anagram of Zauberflöte — the work is based on Mozart’s The Magic Flute, breaking down themes from the opera’s overture as well as the Queen of the Night aria, and spinning them out of control. Zare’s charming and clever work includes an “Overt Metrical Fugue,” (a serendipitous anagram of Magic Flute Overture) using a subject that mashes up all of the disassembled Mozart motives. Overseeing their mythic initiation and psychic healing are two Ancients, votaries of a temple on a wooded hilltop.As in the Mozart precedent, which the composer certainly had in mind, there is also a more workaday couple, Jack and Bella. The other principals are Jenifer's businessman father King Fisher, who wants to stop the wedding for reasons of his own, and an Erda-like seer. There is also a dancer, Strephon, leading the exuberant ballet in which the orchestra completes the story of enlightenment and passion.
