Ian Venables' setting of four poems of A.E. Housman originally scored for tenor solo, string quartet and piano, here arranged for tenor and piano. Lyrical pieces of intermediate difficulty, sometimes elegiac, sometimes angry. Written in 2004 but very much in the English song tradition of Finzi, Gurney and Warlock these are therefore ideal recital companions to those composers.

The songs of Mieczyslaw Karlowicz appeared in the history of Polish song as a rather unusual phenomenon. In the output of this outstanding symphonist - as youthful works - they formed an anacrusis, albeit a significant one, to his fully mature and masterful output. Nearly all of them were written over the course of a single year. Composed on the margins of his academic course in composition, they appear to represent a document of deeply personal feelings and thoughts, seismographically recording his current states of mind. Of the twenty-nine songs known to have existed, twenty-two have come down to us; the seven unpublished works, some merely sketched, were lost during the Second World War. Overlooking a couple of them, of a separate character, they form a remarkably coherent body of work. On closer inspection, it turns out that this cohesion of a distinctive character marks the whole of Karlowicz's oeuvre. Thesymphonic poems of the composer of Eternal songs are set within the same space of ideas and meanings as the songs; they are marked by analogous categories of expression. And it is a space which the composers main biographer, Adolf Chybinski, described as teeming with tragedy and boundless woe, resignation and a longing for another world'. In terms of the style of utterance, Mieczyslaw Karlowiczs songs - although deeply rooted in late Romantic style - have often been described as output standing on the threshold of a modernist phase. Zdzislaw Jachimecki wrote in 1930:A warm lyrical note in many of them, a genuine inspiration manifested in the very natural way inwhich the melodies are drawn, unsophisticated forms of accompaniment, which are nevertheless suited to the mood of the poetry in question and organically linked to the song, and the accomplished declamation and construction of these works have earned Karlowicz's songs deserved popularity in Polish singing circles.

An Album of Twenty French Songs arranged for Bassoon and Piano by Martin GattFauréâ??s poignant love song Après un rêve exists in many different transcriptions for various instruments (the most famous version perhaps being the one for cello and piano that Pablo Casals made in 1910), and provides the initial inspiration for this album of French songs transcribed for bassoon and piano. The bassoon is capable of a broad range of timbres and expression, and it is the lyrical, vocal quality of the instrument that Martin Gatt has always been attracted to. In both his performance and teaching, his emphasis is on the importance of what he calls â??vocalisingâ?? through the bassoon, and for him, music for the voice â?? especially art songs of the 19th and 20th centuries â?? has been a rich source of material for exploring the expressive tonal colours of the bassoon. The treasure trove of French art song from composers ranging from Claude Arrieu to Louis Vierne, not to mention the greats like Berlioz or Debussy or Ravel, has made the task of choosing which songs to include in this album a difficult one. In the end, Martin has settled on eight composers who have produced some of the most appealing music in the genre â?? Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921), Georges Bizet (1838-1875), Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894), Jules Massenet (1842-1912), Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924), Henri Duparc (1848-1933), Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944), and Francis Poulenc (1899-1963). Rather than grouping by composer, the songs are set out in a way that contrasts different emotional worlds and sentiments, from the vibrant exuberance of Chabrierâ??s Lâ??île heureuse to the gentle melancholy of Poulencâ??s Mais mourir. These â??songs without wordsâ? for the bassoon, clearly demonstrate the instrumentâ??s cantabile qualities, varied nuances, and wide-ranging emotional possibilities.

The Sephardic culture originates from the Jewish population of Spain that was banished at the end of the 15th century and afterwards spread to the whole of the Mediterranean area, the Balkan and North Africa. Its unique Spanish dialect Ladino was preserved, finding musical expression in ballads, lyrical and paraliturgical songs for the most part. The choir conductor and composer Ohad Stolarz took eight of these Sephardic Folk Songs and arranged them as a cappella settings for four-part mixed choir. These arrangements may be performed both as a cycle and individually, being also suitable for non-professional choirs due to their lack of difficulty. The musically and harmonically colorful, partly also exotic pieces therefore present an enrichment for the program of every interculturally interested choir. The informative preface and the translations of the lyrics into German and English enable the content-related engagement with Sephardic culture, too. Further choral literature on this topic can be found in the volumes Sepharad and Aschkenaz by Alon Wallach.Audio samples: RIAS Kammerchor, dir. Songs for Christmas contains songs that you might use for performances in a holiday concert. Sing a little Christmas would be an excellent holiday concert opener. It's fast and fun and your students will love it. In the Bleak Midwinter is a total contrast - slow, lyrical and beautiful. Although many of the songs are in 2 or 3 parts, they would all be possible to perform in unison. Just teach the melody throughout for your younger or less experienced choirs.

Heinios Symphony No. 2 'Songs of Night and Love' is reminiscent more of a song cycle; it has a baritone soloist in each of its movements. The texts are based on sensual poems by Lassi Nummi. Night or love, or both together are fundamental themes running throughout the symphony. Its dream-like landscapes are dominated by quiet and lyrical tones but the finale has the heat of dark Mediterranean nights.
