While unknown today, composer William Pettee (1839a1891) was clearly a remarkable musician and composer evidenced by the fact that he wrote funeral music for Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses S. Grant. This funeral music survives to this day in a piano reduction format and is the basis of some of my most current arranging projects. This new edition of Olosabut was the culmination of years of research into the era commonly called The Golden Age of Bands, a period spanning 1880a1920. This project initially began when I played the solo part for Olosabut with a reading band when I was a guest artist at the Northwest Brass Festival in Seattle in 2010. For this new edition, I created a score with modern transpositions. Prior to this, there has been no score for this music. There is often no score for American band music from this era. I also adjusted the dynamics and articulations to allow the soloist to be heard and composed a handful of new musical lines to correct the problems stemming from inconsistent number of measures in the original edition. Finally, I created a reduction for tuba and piano as well as a new edition for solo tuba and orchestra. Olosabut (atuba soloa spelled backwards) from 1885 is possibly the oldest American tuba solo to survive to the twenty-first century. I have done extensive research in this area, and while there may be some earlier pieces with small obbligato solos for tuba, and perhaps even earlier full-fledged tuba solos, I believe this is the earliest music with a serious solo tuba part throughout that survives to this day. In the Tuba Source Book, several early solos are listed from the 1880s. In my research, I have attempted to obtain all of the music listed in the Tuba Source Book from the 1880s or earlier though the Library of Congress and various historic libraries in America. Most of this music for solo tuba and band is incomplete or entirely unavailable today though. The earliest of these is Southwellas Quickstep (Fun for Basses) from 1881. This is described as a novelty march for tuba section, however. A notable omission from the Tuba Source Book, though, is William Petteeas Olosabut, which is clearly marked 1885 on the original published sheet music. This piece is not listed in the Tuba Source Book. However, a different piece by Pettee called Osceola is listed from 1889.While unknown today, composer William Pettee (1839-1891) was clearly a remarkable musician and composer evidenced by the fact that he wrote funeral music for Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses S. Libro de glosas is based on the Trattado de glosas by Diego Ortiz (1510 - ca. 1570). The intertextuality between different materials and musical techniques and processes of the 16th century was one of my main interests when I wrote this piece for the wonderful sound and quality of the Calefax ensemble. The intertextual relationships are as follows:Recercada I is based on the first chords of the chanson Doulce memoire by Pierre Sandrin. It is also used in Trattado de glosas.Recercada II is based on the incipit of the madrigal O felici occhi miei by Jacques Arcadelt. It is also used in Trattado de glosas.Recercada III is based on the ostinato Passamezzo antico. It is also used in Trattado de glosas.Recercada IV is freely based on the tenor La Spagna. It is also used in Trattado de glosas.Batalla (V) is a free composition in form of a battaglia and is based on some ostinati of Spanish origin as well as on an anonymous theme from the 16th century. There are also some bars of a batalla by Joseph Ximenez (18th century).Libro de glosas esta basada en el Trattado de glosas de Diego Ortiz (1510 - ca. 1570). La Gata Golosa (The Greedy Cat) is one of the most famous and beloved melodies of Colombia. It is a pasillo (literally, little step) – a South American musical genre related to the waltz. Originally named Soachita for the children of the Soacha area of Bogota, Garcia renamed it after a restaurant (piqueteadoro) he frequented. The restaurant’s actual name was La Gaité Gauloise (meaning French gaiety) but was nicknamed La Gata Golosa by the local customers. This virtuoso piano arrangement by Eduardo Rojas draws out many moods and musical colors from these delightful melodies while remaining playful and upbeat.

In the 1980s and 1990s there was a new surge of interest in the old swing of the 30s and 40s. The epicentre of this swing revival lay in the American state of California, Los Angeles and San Francisco in particular. Based on therules of the old swing in which each beat has a ternary subdivision but with more contemporary sounds and harmonies, Peter Kleine Schaars composed this work San Fransisco Swing. Through the frequent use of the rhythmiccells 22, 23 and 24 in all parts of this composition, each band, irrespective of its experience with swing music, will be able to give a swinging performance!

In The Pioneers Philip Sparke salutes the bicentenary of an expedition by two all time American heroes - Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were commissioned by US President Thomas Jefferson to find the headwaters of the Missouri and a route to the Pacific following the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the USA. They set out as the ‘Corps of Discovery’ from Louisville, Kentucky, in May 1804 and not only did they succeed in reaching the Pacific through hostile territory, but also found their way back - in 3 years! The piece is not descriptive of the journey but gives the composer the opportunity to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this amazing feat. Add a touchof the wild-west to any concert with this exciting work.
