Johan de Meij's first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. The movements are: I. GANDALF (The Wizard) II. LOTHLORIEN (The Elvenwood) III. GOLLUM (Smeagol) IV. JOURNEY IN THE DARK a. The Mines of Moria b. The Bridge of Khazad-Dum V. HOBBITS (all movements available separately AM 01-010 ... AM 05-010)The symphony was written in the period between March 1984 and December 1987, and had its premiere in Brussels on 15th March 1988,performed by the "Groot Harmonie-orkest van de Gidsen" under the baton of Norbert Nozy. In 1989, The Symphony The Lord of the Rings was awarded a first prize in the Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in Chicago, and a year later, the symphony was awarded by the Dutch Composers Fund. In 2001, the orchestral version was premiered by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.

De eerste symfonie van Johan de Meij The Lord of the Rings is gebaseerd op de gelijknamige trilogie van J.R.R. Tolkien.Dit boek, in Nederland bekend onder de titel In de ban van de ring, heeft sinds de verschijning in 1955 vele miljoenen lezers over de gehele wereld weten te boeien. De symfonie bestaat uit vijf afzonderlijke delen, die ieder een figuur of een belangrijke episode uit het boek illustreren. Het werk is gecomponeerd voor een normale harmonieorkestbezetting, uitgebreid met sopraansaxofoon, flugelhorn en piano. De delen zijn:I) GANDALF (The Wizard) [ 6'25" ]II) LOTHLORIEN (The Elvenwood) [ 7'40" ]III) GOLLUM (Smeagol) [ 9'40" ]IV) JOURNEY IN THE DARK [9'00" ]a. The Mines of Moriab. The Bridge of Khazad-DumV) HOBBITS [ 9'30" ]De symfonie beleefde zijn wereldpremiere op 15 maart 1988 te Brussel uitgevoerd door het Groot Harmonie-orkest van de Gidsen o.l.v. Norbert Nozy. In 2001 vond de premiere plaats van de versie voor symfonieorkest, uitgevoerd door het Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest. Met The Lord of the Rings won Johan de Meij in 1989 de prestigieuse Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition. Een internationale jury koos het werk uit 147 inzendingen. Inmiddels zijn er reeds twaalf integrale versies van de symfonie op Cd verschenen.De delen jijn separaat verkrijgbaar: AM 01-010 ... AM 05-010

Seit ihrem Erscheinen im Jahre 1955 hat die beruhmte Buchtrilogie der Herr der Ringe Millionen Leser auf der ganzen Welt in ihren Bann gezogen. Die gleichnamige Sinfonie von Johan de Meij besteht aus funf verschiedenen Teilen, die alle Figuren und Episoden aus dem Buch aufgreifen. Gandalf ist der edle Zauberer, Lothlorien der wunderbare Elfenwald. Im dritten Teil tritt das monstrose Wesen Gollum auf. Teil vier beschreibt die muhsame Reise durch die unterirdischen Gange der Minen von Moria. Den Schluss bildet der unbesorgte Charakter von den Hobbits. La symphonie est composee de cinq mouvements separes illustrant chacun un personnage ou un episode important de ce grand succes litteraire. L'oeuvre est ecrite pour orchestre d'harmonie, avec des parties reservees au saxophone soprano, au bugle et au piano. La version pour orchestre symphonique a ete creee en 2001 par l'Orchestre Philharmonique de Rotterdam.Avec The Lord of the Rings Johan de Meij a obtenu en 1989 le prestigieux prix de la Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition, selectionne par un jury international parmi 147 oeuvres en competition. Entre- temps, douze versions ont deja ete enregistrees sur disque compact.Tous les cinq mouvements sont disponibles separement: AM 01-010 ... AM 05-010.
