Franz Liszt arrangea maintes uvres d autres compositeurs pour son instrument de prédilection, privilégiant toutefois les extraits des uvres scéniques de son ami et beau-fils Richard Wagner. Liszt traita à deux reprises le «Vaisseau Fantôme»: hormis la Ballade de Senta, il mit tout son génie pour transcrire au piano également le ch ur des fileuses extrait du 2e acte («Bon rouet, gronde et bourdonne»). Étincelant d une brillance virtuose, son «ch ur des fileuses» est resté jusqu à aujourd hui l une de ses transcriptions les plus appréciées. Pour notre édition Urtext, nous avons pu disposer entre autres de l autographe de Weimar et des révisions de la main de Liszt provenant des archives de la maison d édition Breitkopf

Arrangements for the piano, transcriptions and opera paraphrases take up a large part in Franz Liszt's complete ouvre. He even arranged scenes from the music dramas of Richard Wagner. The transcription of 'Lied an den Abendstern' comes from the third act of the romantic opera Tannhauser und der Sangerkrieg auf Wartburg. In his transcription of 1849 Liszt kept exactly to Wagner's original but he divided the scene into 'Recitative' and 'Romance'. He transposed the piece to the keys of G sharp minor and A flat major, which sound warmer on the piano and which also allow for a more easy-to-play romantic piano setting. Liszt uses the cantilena of the violoncellos in Wagner's original as tonal highlight with octaves in the descant. A transcription that is beautiful to listen to for both pianist and audience and perfectly suitable for concert performances and recitals.

With his first String Quartet in D minor, op. 77, composed in 1855, the native Swiss composer Joachim Raff bid a brilliant farewell to Weimar. He had been there as Franz Liszt's assistant since 1850 and had made a name for himself in the city's art scene - now he embarked on new paths. He composed his second Quartet in A major, op. 90, already in 1857 in Wiesbaden, the spa town that was to become his home for 21 years. The two quartets are unequivocal works: orchestrally-conceived, full of energetic vigor, and at times uncompromisingly modern. They confidently continue the Beethoven tradition and attest at the same time to Raff's intensive confrontation with Richard Wagner's music during the Weimar years. In his chamber music, the composer wanted to achieve progress in an inherently historical way and to ground the individual substance in existing forms, as he told the Viennese violinist Josef Hellmesberger, who launched opus 77. The quartets, first published in 1860/62, found illustrious interpreters, among them, the Muller brothers' renowned ensemble, to which opus 90 was also dedicated, and Joseph Joachim.In collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Archiv Lachen (CH)Some eighteen years elapsed between Raff's first counted String Quartet op. 77 and his Quartets Nos. 6-8 op. 192, combined as one work. As such, Raff parted with the weighty single opus in quartet composition - without, however, sacrificing musical quality.
