Palestrina's Missa Iste confessor is contained in the Missarum liber quintus, the composer's fifth book of masses which was first printed in Rome in 1590 and reprinted the following year in Venice. Palestrina dedicated this book of masses to the art-loving Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria, the lord and patron of his famous contemporary Orlando di Lasso.The thematic substance of the mass is based on the old, eponymous hymn melody from the Commune Confessorum. The various parts of the hymn not only constitute the melodic framework for the principal themes of the different movements, but are also heard in melodic and rhythmic variations at a great number of places within the movements.The Missa Iste corifessor had been published several decades ago by Breitkopf & Hartel in a practical edition prepared by Hermann Bauerle. Our edition is based on the print of 1590, a copy of which was consulted at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich. For today's choral practice, it seemed preferable to transpose the mass, which was originally in the eighth church mode. The note values were reduced by a half and, departing from the original, the closing notes are reproduced uniformly as longae.The Missa Iste confessor has long ranked as one of the most widely admired masses of the Roman master. This piece originated as an introduction to instrumental musique-concrete. In this sort of piece it is common for sound phenomena to be so refined and organised that they are not so much the results of musical experiences as of their own acoustic attributes. Timbres, dynamics and so on arise not of their own volition but as components of a concrete situation characterised by texture, consistency, energy, resistance.This does not come from within but from a liberated compositional technique. At the same time it implies that our customary sharply-honed auditory habit is thwarted. Le fantastique et le merveilleux y jouent un rôle primordial mais l'humour et la portée philosophique qui s'en dégage les font parfois ressembler des satires plus qu' des contes pour enfants. Doté d'une imagination extraordinaire, Andersen allie l'ironie et le rêve en un subtil mélange. Traduits en plus de quatre-vingts langues, ses contes n’ont pas de temporalité et continuent d’inspirer les écrivains, réalisateurs, chorégraphes, sculpteurs, peintres et compositeurs.The Last Dream of the Old Oak (Le dernier rêve du chêne) deMaxime Aulio s’inspire du conte éponyme d’Andersen. La musique descriptive nous raconte l’histoire d’un chêne antique et séculaire. « Il avait justement atteint trois cent soixante-cinq ans (…). Souvent, par les beaux jours d'été, il discutait avec les éphémères qui venaient s'ébattre et tourbillonner gaiement autour de sa couronne. (…) Le temps approchait où il allait se reposer (…). Le chêne (…) s'endormit pour tout le long hiver ; et il eut bien des rêves, où sa vie passée lui revint en souvenir. (…) Et, tout coup, le chêne éprouva comme si un nouveau et puissant courant de vie partant des extrémités de ses racines le traversait de part en part, montant jusqu' sa cime, jusqu'au bout de ses plus hautes feuilles. (…) Soudainement, ses racines se détachèrent de terre. (…) Ce fut la fin du rêve du vieux chêne. Une tempête terrible soufflait sur mer et sur terre. (…) Il tomba, au moment où il rêvait qu'il s'élançait vers l'immensité des cieux. (…) »Les couleurs et les atmosphères créées par Maxime Aulio laissent l'imagination toute la liberté de ses rêveries.The Last Dream of the Old Oak est une commande de la Communauté de Communes de Vinay en Isère (France) pour l’inauguration de son Musée de la Noix. L’œuvre fut donnée en création sous le titre éphémère du Dernier rêve du noyer, mais l’histoire racontée était bien celle.
