Joseph Horovitz: Music Hall Suite: Brass Ensemble: Score

For Brass Quintet-Joseph Horovitz. Suite of five pieces for brass quintet: two trumpets horn trombone and tuba. Set of parts.This work was composed in 1964 at the request of the well known American tuba player Roger Bobo. It was soon taken into the repertoire of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble who gave the first BBC broadcast. The first recording was on Pye records by the Hallé Brass Ensemble. Since then it has become a regular repertoire piece and recorded as well as broadcast all over the world.The Suite consists of five movements all illustrating aspects of the Burlesque Theatre Music Hall circus and cabaret so popular at the end of the 19th century and into the 20th. Thetitles of the short movements are: Soubrette Song Trick Cyclists Adagio Team Soft Shoe Shuffle and Les Girls.The five orchestral brass instruments (two trumpets horn trombone and tuba) are exploited in a chamber music manner but the cumulative effect has a theatrical quality in keeping with the title.

Par RAE JAMES. This work was written for and dedicated to the clarinettist Mark Walton OAM by way of a thank you for all his fine recordings and performances of my music. It was premiered in London by Mark and his accompanist David Miller OAM, on June 29th 2014 in the Princess Alexandra Hall at Royal Over-Seas League, Mayfair in a concert entitled ‘Clarinet Hidden Treasures from England’ which was organised to launch Mark’s CD of the same name. The two-disc album, as its title suggests, contains works for clarinet and piano in a variety of styles by English composers including Mike Cornick, Jonathan FeBland, Paul Harris, Paul Harvey, Joseph Horovitz, Gordon Jacob, Christopher Norton and Sid Phillips. This sheet music album includes two pieces: Cloudy Bay is in the north east of New Zealand’s South Island, brought to world fame by the fine Sauvignon Blanc wine sharing the same name. This movement is very dreamy and reflective in nature and was inspired by Mark’s exquisite, silky sound. Beatin’ about the Bush! is a celebration of Mark’s highly successful pioneering outreach programme of workshops bringing music to young musicians in the Outback of Australia and beyond. Beautifully presented up-to-date sight-reading tunes for young Piano students.Film composer Rachel Grave graduated with her second Masters Degree in Composition for Screen from the Royal College of Music where she studied with Joseph Horovitz and David Burnand. She gained her first degree in Music at the University of Surrey and then took her first Masters at the Guildhall in London where she studied with composer Malcolm Singer.She scored the award winning short animation Five O’Clock Shadow which has been screened at Cannes Film Festival. Her piece for choreographer Yessica Lovbrand was broadcast on Radio 3. Rachel has composed the film music for manyfilms including El m o and Two Left Feet for the animator Laura Marion James and several films for the German Director Andreas Ksoll. She has scored a feature documentary and an American feature film Crash Down Hearts for Kovach Productions.Rachel is currently working as assistant to EMMY nominated composer Guy Michelmore where she has orchestrated for some feature animated Marvel films.Her current projects include a feature film for Kovack Productions in the US a wildlife film for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and orchestrating a feature film Planet Hulk for Marvel and Lionsgate Pictures.
