Wine Women and Song op. 333-À l?instar du Beau Danube bleu la valse Wein Weib und Gesang op. 333 (Aimer boire et chanter 1869) a été composée à l?origine pour le Wiener Männergesangverein (Chœur d?Hommes de Vienne). Johann Strauss s?est inspiré d?une citation attribuée à Martin Luther « Qui n'aime point le vin les femmes ni le chant restera sot toute sa vie » (?Wer nicht liebt Wein Weib und Gesang der bleibt ein Narr sein Leben lang?).La version originale de Strauss s?ouvre avec un long passage d?ouverture de près de cent mesures (Quasi religioso suivie d?un Allegro) très rarement joué. Cette transcription pour Orchestre d?Harmonie en est égalementdépourvue mais débute néanmoins avec une introduction brillante (Maestoso) d?où se détache la première ligne mélodique qui revient plus tard dans le quatrième air de valse. Le premier thème représente la quintessence de l?art de vivre viennois ; Strauss s?appuie sur la chanson à boire 'Stoß an stoß an du Liebchen mein' (?Trinquons ma bien-aimée?) extraite de son opérette Wiener Blut (Sang viennois). Les trois airs qui suivent font également preuve de vivacité et d?élégance. Et bien entendu comme dans toutes les autres valses de concert le thème initial revient dans le passage de fin. Une courte cadence endiablée clôt l?œuvre.

opus 117-L?Annen-Polka op. 117 de Johann Strauss fils fut présentée en 1852 soit dix ans après la première publique de la Beliebte Annen-Polka op. 137 composée par son père. Le fait que tous deux aient écrit une polka portant le même nom n?est pas un hasard. En effet l?Annenfest (la fête de sainte Anne) était alors la fête d?été la plus populaire de Vienne. Chaque compositeur viennois célèbre ou inconnu a composé une œuvre pour cette occasion. Johann Strauss fils avait 26 ans quand il écrivit cette polka. Il n?était pas en très bons termes avec son père ; une rivalité notoire bouillonnait entre eux. Cependant la création de sa nouvelle œuvre connutun vif succès. Elle fut bissée à plusieurs reprises et louée pour ses motifs très dansants. Dès lors elle triompha sur les scènes du monde entier.

Following the universal success of his dance music Johann Strauss turned his attention to operetta. Die Fledermaus was one of his finest efforts in which he created a sparkling masterpiece that premiered to instant acclaim onthe Vienna stage in 1874.Alfred is still in love with the Rosalinde now the wife of Gabriel von Eisenstein and tries to serenade her. Rosalinde resists but melts on hearing his high A. The suitor leaves as Eisensteinarrives from court: he has been sentenced to a fortnight in jail for a civil offence. Falke a friend slips in and invites Eisenstein to a masquerade so he can accumulate pleasant memories before his confinement in jail.Rosalinde receives the ardent Alfred but their tête- -tête is interrupted by the warden Frank who mistakes Alfred for the man he has come to arrest. Rosalinde persuades Alfred to save her name by posing as her husband and Frankcarts him off to jail. In an antechamber at the palace Rosalinde arrives disguised as a Hungarian countess and is soon wooed by her own husband whose pocket watch she steals to hold as proof of his philandering.Champagne flows and the guests dance wildly until dawn. When the clock strikes six Eisenstein staggers off to keep his appointment at the jail. Frank arrives at the prison still giddy with champagne. Hearing someone atthe door he admits Eisenstein who has come to begin his sentence. The new prisoner is surprised to learn his cell is already occupied by a man who claims to be Eisenstein and who was found supping with Rosalinde! Rosalindeherself then hurries in to secure Alfred's release and press divorce charges against her husband. Enraged Eisenstein accuses his wife of promiscuity at which Rosalinde whips forth the watch she took from him at the ball. All ispronounced to have been a joke and Orlofsky and his guests celebrate the reconciliation of Rosalinde and Eisenstein. This is the Schirmer edition of the Libretto in English only.
