Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach was the eldest surviving son of Johann Sebastian Bach and his second wife Anna Magdalena Wulcken; he was born in Leipzig in 1732. His father gave him his first music instruction. After his initial studies in law he devoted himself entirely to music. In 1750 he entered the services of Count Wilhelm zu Buckeburg where he first of all was engaged as the Count's chamber musician (Hochgraflicher Schaumburg-Lippischer Cammer-Musicus) later as orchestral director a post which he held until his death in 1795. The 'Buckeburg Bach' is described as an amiable and devout person who was highly respected and esteemed for his 'rectitude greatness of soul readiness to oblige and kindness' (Schlichtegroll Nekrolog). He was an exceedingly industrious and gifted composer in whom one couldnot fail to recognise that the spirit of his great father had also been communicated to him' (Dulon). Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach's Sonata A Violoncello Solo Col Basso appears in print for the first time with this edition. The autograph which served as source was held at the time in the University Library at Tubingen depot of the former Prussian State Library under the call-mark Mus. ms. autogr. Bach P 382 which has subsequently been moved to the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin Preussischer Kulturbesitz. For practical use the accompaniment has been realised from the unfigured Bass. - Piano reduction and separte parts for Cello and Basso continuo.

The poem inspired Bach to write one of his most impressive church compositions altogether.This remarkably extensive score with twelve sheets sheds particularly instructiveand detailed light on Bach's creative process. Third Part of the Clavier Ubung-In 1739 Bach?s Third Part of the Clavier Übung was published on 80 pages closely printed. Ever since then the collection has been regarded as a high point in the history of Organ composition as it offers an impressive cross section of Bach?s artistry.This present volume is an updated edition of Volume 4 Series IV of the New Bach Edition presented by Manfred Tessmer in 1969. A fully revised edition proved unnecessary as there were relatively few corrections affecting the musical text. However the volume now includes a detailed Preface by Christoph Wolff which discusses not only the work?s genesis but also offers an up-to-datedescription of the sources. For the new engraving of the musical text page-turns were reviewed and improved.Bach?s autograph is considered lost and so the main source is the original print of the collection from 1739. In collaboration with the Leipzig Bach Archive and its database Bach Digital this new edition includes links to two important copies of the original print which contain hand-written entries by Bach himself.Any complete scholarly-critical edition of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach must in the interest of its use by researchers and performers incorporate intervening new discoveries wherever possible. With this in mind Bärenreiter has entered an agreement with the Leipzig Bach Archive to reissue particular volumes as applicable either in updated performing editions based on the New Bach Edition or in thoroughly revised editions based on the New Bach Edition - revised. From early in the 17th century until the form engaged the interest of Johann Sebastian Bach various notable German composers - including Rosenmüller Fischer Fasch and Telemann - had contributed to the development of the orchestral suite or 'Ouverture' whose name betrays its French theatrical origins. From Bach himself only four such suites have survived thanks to the diligence of C.F.Penzel a student at the Thomasschule from 1751 who made copies of Bach's MSS which he found there. Thus neither the dates nor the order of composition of the suites can be established with any certainty. As to the present suite in D major recent criticism suggests that it mayoriginally have been written for strings only and dates in its final form from around 1731. Penzel's copy of the suite includes significant variants to be played by a solo violin (marked Violino Concertato) which are included here in the Appendices.The score is newly-edited from the extant sources consisting of sets of parts (some in Bach's autograph) and copyist's scores are preserved in the Staastbibliothek zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbestitz Musikabteilung mit Mendelssohn-Archiv. This edition replaces the former Eulenburg miniature score edited by Wilhelm Altmann.
