The resurrection of Jesus changed the world and continues to change the world today. Jesus! The Resurrection of the Messiah tells the intimate story of the grief, the fear, the hope, the love, the tenderness, and the longing of God for His children expressed through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Mary McDonald and Rose Aspinall combined their talents to create a compelling musical that will take you through the emotions of the Triumphal Entry, the raising of Lazarus, the Last Supper, the moment in the garden when Jesus is arrested, the Crucifixion, and finally to the joyous Resurrection. This work may be programmed in its entirety or presented in segments during Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and Resurrection Sunday worship settings. It may be done with choir and piano alone or can include the optional orchestrations created by Michael Lawrence and Ed Hogan. “Oh, freedom!” Mark Hayes’s inspired medley of spirituals is a remarkable tribute to courage in the face of adversity, the triumph of the human spirit, and the amazing grace that guides and sustains each of us through hardship. Opening with a slow, prayer-like setting of “Oh, Freedom,” this medley gradually builds in intensity through a thoughtful series of spirituals, including “Guide My Feet,” “I Want Jesus to Walk with Me,” and “Jesus Is a Rock in a Weary Land,” closing exuberantly with tenor solo and choir singing “Free at Last.” Great for school concerts, it’s also a terrific choice for worship throughout the year, especially Christ the King, Eastertide, Lent and Reformation. Don’t miss Mark’s outstanding optional orchestration!

In this composition Schneider uses the famous words from the liturgy for Good Friday: Darkness fell, and on the ninth hour Jesus called out with a loud voice: My God, why hast Thou forsaken me? Here he draws on the earlier form of the trope, using what was a common device in composition in medieval times, inserted into already completed works as a sort of commentary. In this sense * making use of the post-modern principle of suggesting links across the ages * TENEBRAE makes reference to the motet Tenebrae factae sunt (Schott, C 51305) by Davide Perez (1711-1782), from which some melodic fragments have been taken and freely developed. An explosively contrived stylisation is set against the self-contained world of sound in the original piece. A recording of this title is available on CD WER 62962.

“‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus.” Tomlin and Giglio include the text and tune from this wonderful hymn in their popular Christian song, “Enough.” Larry Shackley has crafted a spectacular arrangement that showcases vocal sections in frequent call and response. The addition of his rhythm score makes this a perfect choice for blended or contemporary worship.
