There are perhaps, 200 classic ragtime pieces that represent a corpus of extraordinary beauty - some of the most straightforward, melodious, and out and out joyful music that there ever was. In the early 1960?s guitar players started to tackle arranging this music. David Laibman and Dave Van Ronk were in the vanguard of this movement. Van Ronk?s arrangement of St. Louis Tickle became a rite of passage for fingerstyle guitarists. Thelonious Sphere Monk was a towering figure in the story of modern jazz. He was also one of the great originals in all of jazz history with a unique piano style perfectly suited to his visionary approach to composition andimprovisation. He is even better remembered as the composer of some of the classics of jazz: 'Round About Midnight and Blue Monk. For years regarded as a far-out eccentric Monk has now taken his rightful place in the pantheon ofjazz greats. Monk's music is a challenge on any instrument and particularly for fingerstyle guitar. Duck Baker draws on his experience performing and arranging many jazz styles from ragtime to free jazz in attempting tocapture Monk's bittersweet harmonic feeling on the six strings of the guitar. Duck teaches arrangements of Blue Monk Lulu's Back in Town 'Round About Midnight and Light Blue. As a bonus rare footage of Monk performing the firstthree tunes is included from a 1966 concert with his great quartet featuring Charlie Rouse. Ton Van Bergeyk launched his career as a musician during the late 1960s playing blues Harp and Ukulele in a duo setting, but he then switched to the acoustic Guitar and quickly learned and mastered the instrument using fingerstyle techniques. He started to transcribe and arrange classic ragtime compositions for fingerpicking Guitar and was discovered by Stefan Grossman during a tour in Holland. Stefan produced Ton's first solo album, Famous Ragtime Guitar Solos, in 1973. This contained 14 of Ton's arrangements of classic ragtime pieces and became a best seller. In 1975, Ton's second solo album, Guitar Instrumentals To Tickle Your Fingers, was released containing transcriptions and arrangements of novelty rags, early jazz and popular tunes of the 1930s and 1940s. In 1980, Ton's third solo album was released and continued his exploration of arrangements for solo fingerpicking Guitar, this time with a repertoire covering jazz, blues, contemporary pop and country and even Mexican folklore. This album was titled Lulu's Back In Town, Hot Guitar Solos. Ton also participated in several anthology projects, i.e. Novelty Guitar Instrumentals, I Got Rhythm, Masters of Ragtime Guitar, The Entertainer and How To Play Ragtime Guitar. All of Ton's albums are available as CDs as well as direct downloads from Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop, (www.guitarvideos.com) and include tab PDF booklets on the CDs.
