One of the most famous songs of the French repertoire, the melody is derived from an Eighteenth-Century Air de Chasse (or hunting tune), entitled La Tete Bizarde (The Bizard Head). The oldest known publication of the tune is an organ arrangement by Romary Grosjean (1815-1888), musicologist and organist of the Cathedral of Saint-Die'-des-Vosges, in an 1862 collection of carols entitled Airs des Noels Lorrains. The French text for the carol was first published in Dom Georges Legeay's collection of ancient carols, Noels anciens (1875-1876). Il est ne', le divin Enfant has been translated into many languages throughout the world. One of the best English translations appeared in Walter Ehret and George K. This work, When Christ Was Born of Mary Free, sets the words of a traditional carol dating from the 15th century sensitively in D minor for the verse, moving to a more joyous F for the Chorus. Darke's papers list this piece as having been scored for Soprano solo, Chorus SATB and Piano. Harold E Darke was an English composer and Organist of international renown. Darke composed extensively for choir and Organ. In 1916, he established the Monday lunchtime Organ recitals at St Michael's Cornhill which continue to this day, the longest-running such series in the world. His setting of Christina Rosetti's poem In the Bleak Midwinter created a melody and lilting Organ accompanimentthat has never fallen from favour. It is regarded as one of the greatest of Christmas carols.

Composed for the internationally regarded Choir of New College, Oxford, and its conductor Edward Higginbottom, Rhian Samuel's What Cheer? is a bright and uplifting new setting of words already familiar to singers from popular carols by William Walton and Peter Warlock. The scoring is for SATB choir and organ, with optional short solos for soprano, alto and bass. An eminent and established song composer, Samuel has brought to this text, originally from a 16th-century commonplace book compiled by Richard Hill, her own idiomatic response to the tradition of music for Christmas. Though written for one of the world's great vocal ensembles, What Cheer? is well within the range of accomplished amateur choirs, and the effective scoring for voices captures in ringing choral sounds the buoyant optimism of this poetic celebration of Christ's birth.
