Improvisational energy inherent in music that spouts The Savage Mind, which is mentioned by Japanese musicologist and anthopologist Masakuni Kitazawa in his book Sound as Metaphor, always fascinates me. One of the aims of writing this work was to test whether a highly refined medium like a string quartet can produce the energy. Charles Camilleri (1931 - 2009) was a Maltese composer. As a teenager, he composed a number of works based on folk music and legends of his native Malta. He moved from his early influences by Maltese folk music to a musical form in which nothing is fixed and his compositions evolve from themselves with a sense of fluency and inevitability. He composed over 100 works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, voice and solo instruments. Camilleri's work has been performed throughout the world and his research of folk music and improvisation, the influences of the sounds of Africa and Asia, together with the academic study of European music, helped him create a universal style. Camilleri is recognized in Malta as one of the major composers of his generation. He died on 3 January 2009 at the age of 77. His funeral took place two days later at Naxxar, his long-time town of residence. Flags across Malta were flown at half-mast in tribute to him. The 4 Greek Songs were composed during the late fifties. The first and third movements capture the loose vocal style of the cantilena which is characteristic for the mediterranean region. The second and fourth movements are based on original dances which are typical for the modal nature of Greek music.

It is exciting to create a String Quartet edition of the rich compositional world of Julius Hemphill’s celebrated writing for Saxophone Quartet. The full range of his compositional concerns is found in these works. For these editions, I have left the articulations as they are in the saxophone edition, reflecting what Hemphill put in his scores and what is gleaned from his recordings. (Please see my notes on Hemphill’s performance practice and on the individual works given in the score.) Your ensemble is invited to add techniques and bowings particular to the string quartet as you hear them. This would be fully within Hemphill’s creative practice. As I note for Saxophone Quartet as well, these works can be be performed with improvisation as originally conceived, or they can stand alone in a Suite format as a multi-movement concert work. Julius Hemphill is celebrated for the brilliance and expressive range of his compositions for Saxophone Quartet and Sextet. The Saxophone Quartet works included in Book I and II were premiered by Julius with the World Saxophone Quartet (WSQ). Covering a broad range of musical styles, they are compelling vehicles for improvisation and equally works that can be performed without improvisation as a concert suite. The orchestration is S/A/T/B, with some doubling of alto and soprano saxophone. These two collections are also available for String Quartet instrumentation and performance.
