German bassoonist and pedagogue Julius Weissenborn is known primarily as an author and composer of method and etude books familiar to all bassoonists. However, he also composed a number of solo works, including a collection of pieces in his Opus 9, for bassoon and piano. The first two works of this opus, Arioso and Humoreske, pair so well together that they are often performed together as a single piece, something slow and lyrical, followed by something quicker and technical. And it just so turns out that with a relatively simple transposition, they are perfectly suited for the bass clarinet. In this edition, for each movement, the piano part has been transposed down a whole-step to better accommodate the bass clarinet.

Rheinberger composed the overture to the Singspiel Der arme Heinrioh in 1870, originally as a piece for piano, four hands. In the orchestral version which he made later this overture, as Rheinberger emphasised, can as well exist as an independent concert piece as any other overture of a comic character. With its cheerfulness and forward-driving energy it stands between such works as Schubert's Overtures in the Italian Style and the early symphonies of Bizet and Gounod. The full score, parts and vocal score have been newly engraved. The piano reduction has been simplified and brought up to today’s standards, thus making it much more manageable to play.

One of these was initiated by Gustav Duben in Stockholm, and the other can be traced back to Georg Osterreich, the Kapellmeister of the Dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf (the latter is known as the Bokemeyer Collection).
