Love Divine All Loves Excelling-Lord With Glowing Heart I'd Praise Thee (Love divine all loves excelling) by Howard Helvey for SATB and Organ. This is a flexible hymn for general worship with an original hymn tune ('Charleston') by Howard Helvey. Either Francis Scott Key's 'Lord with glowing heart I'd praise thee' or Charles Wesley's 'Love divine all loves excelling' may be sung and Helvey employs hymnody's most popular traits including a majestic Organ introduction an emphatic unison first verse and a soaring Soprano descant.

This Good Friday anthem was written in 1997 for a large festival choir, though it can be used effectively with small choirs as well. The poignant and little-known text was written in 1975 by Eliza Sibbald Alderson, sister of the celebrated minister and composer John Bacchus Dykes. Like many of her hymns and poetry this text was written at her brother's request, and reflects on the sufferings of Christ. The music begins in solemn fashion and incorporates a great range of emotion. Well-written.
