Sarabande and Gavotte are the second and third movements of the Holberg Suite, Op. 40, a standard movement of the Baroque suite. Both movements may be performed as part of the entire suite or as a stand-alone selection. This arrangement is true to the original work---as feasible and offers the sonorities of the concert band ensemble in a very playable version. The first movement, Praeludium, (00-38363) released last season, has recently been selected as Reviewer's Choice in the October 2012 issue of The Instrumentalist magazine. Sandra Dackow Little Known Gem - Grade V. Prelude, In Minuet Style, Sarabande, Caprice, Pastoral, Air, Frolic. Containing seven fun to play sections, each movement in An English Suite has approachable technical demands while not being too lengthy. The Prelude is neo-Baroque, where Baroque rhythms are combined with Victorian harmonies. Sounding more difficult than it actually is to play, this movement is busy with violin passages that reach high G’s. In Minuet Style has lovely lines for viola and charmingly couples an older form with more advanced harmonic language. The Saraband offers drama and resembles the style and writing of Elgar. There are high G’s for both cello and bass, but the passages are logical and fall under the hand easily. Most technically difficult, the Caprice is a diversion requiring precision, speed, and technique to maneuver through changing harmonies and tonalities. The retro Pastoral was written in a manner similar to the Gavotte from Grieg’s Holberg Suite, while the Air contains effective alternation of solo notes with tutti textures. The final Frolic movement is a fun fiddle tune that is great for featuring the first and second violin sections. It has also served as a theme song for one of New York’s classical music stations. Keep arco accompaniments at the frog and off the string during repetitive rhythmic passages and in pizzicato sections, as they can easily be rushed.

In 1884 the Norwegian city of Bergen celebrated the 200th birthday of Ludvig Holberg, one of its most famous sons and a symbolic figure of the late Baroque era. For this occasion Grieg wrote the piano suite Aus Holbergs Zeit , which he orchestrated for string orchestra. To this day, the Suite - particularly in this arrangement - ranks among Grieg's most popular works. By using the romantic string sound, Grieg brings the late Baroque orchestral suite and its various dance forms to life again. Along with the string serenades of Dvorak and Tchaikovsky, Aus Holbergs Zeit is regarded as the third great late-romantic work for string orchestra. To celebrate the 200th birthday of the playwright Ludvig Holberg, a statue was erected in his honour in 1884. Edvard Grieg, who, like Holberg, was born in Bergen, was commissioned to write an open-air cantata for the ceremony. But he also refers to Holberg in his instrumental music. The result was a “powdered wig piece” (as Grieg wrote to his publisher) that hearkens back to Holberg’s era – a historicising suite of baroque dances for piano, ranging from an exhilarating prelude and several dance numbers to a Bachian “air” and an impetuous “rigaudon”.Later Grieg arranged his “Suite in the Olden Style” for string orchestra. This version became one of his most popular compositions.For our new scholarly-critical edition Christoph Rinne-Schroeder has meticulously examined the original print and compared it with previously neglected performance material annotated by Grieg himself.
