In honor of the 200th anniversary of St. Rose Philippine Duschene’s arrival in New Orleans, Michael Joncas was commissioned to write a new mass setting by the Religious of the Sacred Heart. This edition is scored for SATB voices and features instrumental parts for complete symphony orchestra. Parts may be used according to the players available in your circumstance. The mass includes optional phrases in French and Potawatomi honoring the American saint’s heritage and ministry. The mass may be sung in unison, reserving the choral and instrumental parts for holy days. While some contemporary musical settings of the “Glory to God” seem burdensome and even awkward, Joncas’s melody is absolutely delightful. The singable through-composed Gloria boasts a magnificent and manageable modulation that contributes to the triumphant nature of the piece. This cantata was first performed in Leipzig on New Year's Day 1726. It belongs to a small group of compositions which were composed between Advent 1725 and mid-January 1726 and whose text were written by the same author. There is no reference to the New Year in connection with the circumcision and naming of Jesus in this afternoon worship service. Two settings of the Te Deum by Jan Dismas Zelenka have been survived: the Te Deum in D major ZWV 145 of ca. 1724 and the present Te Deum a due cori in D major ZWV 146, which was composed in 1731. Whereas the Te Deum ZWV 145 is scored for five voices (soli e tutti) and an orchestra including two trumpets and timpani, the setting of the Te Deum a due cori, which includes five soloists and two four-part choirs, as well as four trumpets and timpani, and soloistic flauti traversi is magnificently realized in a more decisive manner. The large, solemn scoring suggests that the work was composed for a worship service on the occasion of the birth of the Electoral Princess Maria Josepha of Saxony. As a singing teacher, choir director and not least as a passionate professional choir singer, Irina Rebhuna is perfectly familiar with the possibilities of the human voice. And so it is hardly surprising that the Latvian musician born in 1988 has devoted herself especially to the composition of vocal music. Her sacred choral work Libera me, Domine for mixed a cappella choir (SSAATTBB) won the special prize for the 'best composition for 4-6 voices' at the International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016. This church music gem, in which the eponymous Gregorian chorale is intonated by one of the (two) bass baritone sections at the beginning - over a musical tapestry woven by the remaining voices - and taken up again by all tenors at the end, is ideal for ambitious amateur choirs. The idea behind this work, says the composer, is 'the human reflection on the uncertain - on death, on Judgment Day or on what is inexplicable to us. Such as humility, excitement, fear,and atonement. The chant ends without ending, there is no solution. Life goes on because we ask the following question again and again: What will happen next?'.
