A Handel Suite

A selection of movements from the two sets of Handel suites (1720 and 1730) as well as various other Keyboard works by the great Baroque composer.The pieces are arranged in progressive order of difficulty making this anthology ideal for confident Piano students. Required repertoire for the serious performer.

Suites Nos. 1 2 3 and 4-The Eight Great Suites is perhaps Handel's best-known and finest collection of keyboard works. Each of the four suites included here is written in full. This edition includes an informative introduction and a textual notes section. Set for the ABRSM Harpsichord examinations grades 5-7.

Poul Ruders' Handel Variations for Orchestra (2009) -Ninety Symphonic Reflections on Eight Bars by Georg Friedrich Handel.Commissioned by and dedicated to the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra in celebration of their 75th anniversary 2010. Premiered by The Aarhus Symphony Orchestra conducted by Giancarlo Andretta at the Aarhus Concert Hall 14 January 2010. Programme noteThe short feisty Bourrée from Handel´s famous Water Music (First Suite in F major) has for some years been hovering at the back of my mind as possessing the perfectpotential for a series of variations. Not unlike the short 'morsel' by Henry Purcell (the witches Ho-ho-ho-chorus from the opera Dido and Aeneas) which kicks off the ten variations of my orchestral work Concerto in Pieces the music per se is not particularly interesting but it nevertheless grows on you and is difficult to get rid of. It is merely a handful of sequences (a technique much used in the Baroque era - a method in which the same motif is being shifted up and down in a specified order). Actually it is only the first eight bars of the Bourrée which I haul through the wringer.It would be obvious to assume that Handel Variations make up a sequel to Concerto in Pieces but in spite of the similarity in character between the two chosen themes the Handel Variations are far more symphonically coherent. There are no less than ninety (!) variations and each variation (they are relatively short ranging from four up to forty-something bars) runs seamlessly into the next creating a huge symphonic body of constantly changing colours. I set out with the original theme without interfering but the 'erosion' begins to gnaw away at the theme already from the first variation. Imagine a vast gallery of Handel portraits in which Georg Friedrich appears at first fully recognizable but then the 'disfiguration' sets in and

This authentic arrangement of ten movements from the Water Music suites dates from Handel’s lifetime but is published here for the first time edited by the distinguished Handel scholar Donald Burrows. Its simple light scoring makes it excellently suited to use by schools and small instrumental groups. It can be performed in many different combinations from the original two violins bassoon and continuo to string quartet or wind-based group.

Here for the first time in a popularly accessible edition are 35 of his finest keyboard works for solo instruments reproduced from the monumental Deutsche Handelgesellschaft edition including eight 'Great Suites' and 'Fugue In A Minor'. For this new edition the pieces have been rearranged and retitled according to the latest scholarly sequences found in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Students and scholars will find many of the ideas Handel sketched here expanded and reworked in later chamber and orchestral works and in the opera dance movements; musicians and every Baroque music lover will see in these neglected pieces 'a Protean Fluidity' (New Grove) worthyof the great composer and more than worthy of any musical library.

The music of Handel is considered the culmination of the Baroque period of music history and his Water Music (1717) has endured in popularity for nearly 300 years! Performed from a barge traveling on the River Thames King George I is said to have liked the music so much that he ordered it repeated several times. Originally three suites each consisting of multiple movements Johnnie Vinson has skillfully adapted this arrangement for young players using Alla Hornpipe from the Suite in D Major and the Air and Allegro from the Suite in F Major.
