Guernica, a peaceful town in the Basque region of Spain, was reduced to ruins on the 26th of April 1937 by Nazi bombers. It was a totally unexpected attack that happened while the crowded open-air market was in progress. Over 1600 innocent citizens were killed. This was one of the most senseless and abhorrent war crimes in history. In this new work by Jan Hadermann the music of the Basque region can clearly be heard, with street musicians adding lustre to the open-air market with dance music. Spring is in the air when suddenly from behind the mountaintops, the death squad appears and all hell breaks loose. The work ends with an intense plea to never let anything like this happenagain. A moving and contemplative new work for concert band. The 1937 Spanish Civil War saw the bombing of the town of Guernica by combined German and Italian air forces, at the behest of the Spanish government. This was one of the first air raids on a defenseless civilian population, and the resulting devastation was so horrible that artists of all stripes sought to express their outrage through their crafts. Chief among these was the painting Guernica by Pablo Picasso, which, in turn, inspired the ten-part poem of the same name by author Carlos de Oliveira. Sharaf now brings this text to a new setting for voice and piano, with either cello or guitar, dedicated to the Ensemble for These Times. The music reflects the utter despair of the event, yet even then, humanity will find glimpses of hope for a return to better times. English translation of the text by Alexis Levitin.

Composed in a relaxed swing style, this catchy tune is built up in layers starting with the trombones. Saxes are added followed by the trumpets, and finally the full ensemble gets in on the fun. There are short but flashy feature spots for each section followed by an interlude leading to the open solo section. All of this is beautifully set using an interaction between a 2-beat feel and straight ahead swing.

Famous sea shanty Haul Away Joe, here arranged for solo piano by talented 20th Century British composer John Longmire.Longmire was born in Gainsborough in 1902 and the publication success of his innovative 'Nine Insect Pieces' in 1924 led to him writing over 50 volumes of music for the piano, many of which remain in print with Forsyth Publishing today. A long-time friend and biographer of John Ireland, they lived together in Guernsey while Ireland wrote some of his finest works and only narrowly escaped the German invasion of 1940, escaping on an overcrowded ferry pursued by a submarine. After returning to the island post-war, Longmire composed the 'Song of Guernsey' for Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh visit in 1949. Later in 1957, when Elizabeth visited again as Queen, he conducted his 'Song of Welcome' sung by 6600 children in St Peter Port. In 1950 he married and emigrated to New Zealand where he was Music Master at Northcote College, Auckland, conductor of the Royal Auckland Choir and a broadcaster hosting weekly talks on music on NZBC. Returning to Guernsey, he became an examiner for Trinity College of Music, also writing 100 pieces for the exam syllabus and adjudicating for Trinity and the ABRSM internationally.

,,Was ist dies? Klang? Wort? Schrift? Was liegt ihnen zugrunde? Fassung. (Hans Zender) CD:Salome Kammer (voice), Klangforum Wien, cond.
