The composer wrote of his work as follows: In the music of Hungary, folk songs are manifestly of great importance, on the other hand our ancient airs and dances play a modest role. For this work I have been influenced by dances of the 17th century, written by unknown amateurs in a relatively simple style. Most of these dances were recorded between the 14th and 18th centuries under the usual form of tablature notation. My interest in this music was first captured in the 1940s. I was so fascinated that I decided to give these melodies new life. I fitted the little eight-bar dances together into ternary and rondo forms, and leaning on early Baroque harmony and counterpoint, I attempted a reminiscence of that atmosphere of the provincial Hungarian Baroque.

Fanfares and Love Songs is traditional in structure; an exciting fanfare opening is followed by an expressive love song. The final movement revisits the fanfares of the first movement whilst a fast paced dance brings the work to a triumphant and breathless close. Fanfares and Love Songs was commissioned by the National Children's Band of Great Britain for their 2009 Summer Course, who gave the premiere of the opening fanfare at their closing concert. The work was premiered in its entirety by the Leyland Band, conducted by Jason Katsikaris, at the RNCM Festival of Brass on 23rd January 2010.

These are fifteen short, but intense works by Leos Janacek. This music is indeed a great gift to the Euphonium solo literature by Mr. Sauer. These pieces can be performed by intermediate to advanced performers and are about 9 minutes total in length.Below are a few notes from the arrangement by Ralph Sauer.Originally for solo piano, the Fifteen Moravian Folksongs are remarkable for their musicality as well as their brevity - the only notated, repeated passage in the entire work is in Number 5. Because Janacek included the text in his piano score (with no indication that it should be sung), and the fact that there are, in many cases, indications that the text is only a first verse, I have included some additional repeats. The mp3 sound sample is from a recital at the 2012 Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara. Performance by Ralph Sauer, trombone and Natasha Kislenko, piano.

The Choir Library for Men's Choir includes distinctly more secular than sacred music. In this, the publishing house's program reflects the great tradition of men's choirs with a predominantly secular repertoire. It inspired many composers to write music for this setting, among them Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. But also lesser-known composers of the romantic period such as Johann Evangelist Habert and Othmar Schoeck created works for men's choirs. More modern composers like Jean Sibelius, Johann Nepomuk David and Siegfried Thiele, also represented here, continue this tradition into the 20th century. We wish you lots of joy at discovering and singing!Sacred MusicI. Nicolae Bretan (1887-1968) was a great singer and composer who had the keys to create great lieder. He understood that the imagery of poetry deeply stirs the subconscious, that verbal images must be weighed and translated with precise yet unmeasurab le artistry into rhythm and harmony. Given songs that penetrate the listener's psyche, that arouse the listener's humanity, that increase the listener's sense of beauty, the singer has munch of his work already done for him. And the singer who sings Bretan is far ahead on the pathways to his audience's mind and heart. The listeners sense new doors onto vistas of order and beauty, torment and calm. This release of energy withinthe audience is the secret of art. Art is eternity's dialogue in whic h the listener participates, which the listener fills in with his own emotion, his own experience...

* Also known as Four Grandmother Songs and Old Granny Tales, this work was composed in New York in 1918 at the beginning of the composer's self-imposed exile from Russia after its Revolution. * These short pieces were immediately successful and were performed worldwide. * In the epigraph to this work Prokofiev wrote, Some recollections had become half erased from her memory; others will never be erased. * Mr. Sauer once again, has produced a magnificent work for Trombone & Piano. * This work with its great character is a joy to perform, about 8 - 9 minutes in length for moderately advanced performers. .

String Thang by Mark Wood is based on the twelve-bar blues. The blues has deep roots in American history, developed out of the work songs and chants of African-American slaves. The Great Migration of the first half of the 20th century saw freed slaves and their descendants move to northern and eastern parts of the U.S., taking their music with them. The blues took on different forms; in turn it helped to create rock, jazz, hip-hop, and other popular genres. A twelve-bar blues uses a repeating chord progression which allows musicians to express themselves creatively with each recurrence. If anything defines the blues, it is the use of blue notes---pitches that don't usually belong in a given key---and elements of improvisation.
